WILL INDIA get to watch The Da Vinci Code  the movie that will be premiered at the Cannes film festival on Wednesday night and is set for worldwide release this week? The Information and Broadcasting Ministry said on Tuesday that clearance would be given to the film only if the Catholic Churches' Association of India (CCAI) okayed it.
Staying the release of the film, I&B Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi said he along with the CCAI representatives and Censor Board members would watch the movie on Wednesday. He asked the board not to give the film a certification till the CCAI gave it a go-ahead.
The Censor Board, with three Catholics, had on Monday cleared the movie without any cuts. It said the movie would be given an A certificate if a disclaimer saying it was a work of fiction was shown at the beginning.
The Goa archbishop has asked constituents not to see the film. The Catholic Secular Forum said it would approach the Bombay High Court for a ban. Its general secretary Joseph Dias said: “We will file a petition on Wednesday. The censor board condition that Sony Pictures insert a disclaimer makes no difference.â€

The Pope hasn’t called for a ban. Catholic Philippines has simply issued an ‘A’ certificate.
But trust India to sit in judgement on whether the movie, The Da Vinci Code, should be banned. And the man sitting in the judge’s chair will be Priya Ranjan Das Munshi by virtue of his post as minister for information and broadcasting.
It is not known if Das Munshi is an authority on film-making but, more important, if his scholarship in Christianity is so stupendous as to make obvious his choice as the final arbiter.
The Code is opening in Rome, the seat of the Catholic Church, and across the world this Friday, but possibly not in India. Industry sources said the government’s move to vet the movie had virtually made sure a delayed release.
If it is not released this Friday, the delay will be seven days because the movie will not open mid-week.
Das Munshi is very helpful, though. He said: “Hopefully (he will watch it) before I sleep tomorrow night.â€
