+1 for GetDataBack for FAT/NTFS...i have used both and can say that they do a very good job though the process takes substantial amount of time.

you can look for some popular bootcd's on the net ( size typically wud be less than 100mb) which contain these kinda data(or even partition) recovery softwares.

Have you tried TestDisk TestDisk_Download.It's a great tool, I have used it many times to fix missing partitions & disks. Best thing is that it fixes usual errors in minutes. Here are some of the features of the application.
TestDisk is OpenSource software and is licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL).

TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting your Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

TestDisk can
Fix partition table, recover deleted partition
Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup
Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector
Fix FAT tables
Rebuild NTFS boot sector
Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup
Fix MFT using MFT mirror
