T’PURAM: Over 7,000 internet consumers in the city are in a fix, thanks to BSNL.
The main server of BSNL internet service, which includes Dataone broadband service and Sancharnet dial-up service, located at Delhi has collapsed and this had affected e-mail communication using Dataone and Sancharnet e-mail IDs.
While some consumers complain that though they are able to send and receive mails, the attachments are not delivered. Some consumers are not receiving any mails over the last several days whereas some others are not able to send mails properly. No failure notices are also generated.
It may be noted that this is happening at a time when e-mail has become an official medium of communication in many key sectors.
“We are really helpless as the problem is with the server which is located in Delhi. We had taken up the issue with them and they had replied that it has been rectified. But we still keep on getting complaints. The e-mail IDs of all the complainants are now being forwarded to Delhi as per their instruction. The problems will be resolved at the earliest,†a BSNL source said.
“I am not receiving any mails in my Dataone e-mail account over the last several days. There is no problem in sending mails or browsing websites. I was more shocked by the irresponsible response of the BSNL authorities when I took up the matter with them,†said TK Devasia, a senior journalist in the city. He is planning to take up the issue with the consumer court.
BSNL sources said that the problem was not limited to Thiruvananthapuram. There were similar complaints from the other districts and even other states.
At present, there are around 40,000 Dataone consumers in the state. A Thiruvananthapuram-based businessman, Renjith, also shared his experience. “I am fully dependent on Dataone e-mail for my business communications. However, it is now posing a real threat to my business as I ‘may or may not’ receive mails.
The chances of losing major business offers which are often received through mails are also high. Since the sender is not receiving any ‘delivery failed’ notice, he may assume that I have rejected the offer,†he said.
