those 1gb 86gt cards r nthin but marketing gimmick...lotta ppl jus go to seller n ask to giv graphic card.....see d amnt of memory n rate...wen they see 1gb card.....they are lured..;)

Sorry to hijact the thread, but i've the same question so i'm going to post it here. From wats been discussed 512 ddr3 won't have a noticeable impact on fps compared to 256 ddr3. My question is, will the extra 256 mb be helpful when editing videos?

^^ imo Nope...

Memory for video editting etc is allocated from the general system RAM. and not from Video card memory.

Rendering 3D on 2 30 inch monitors might utilize around 1GB of graphics memory. But I agree most people buying 1GB 8500GT don't use 2 30 inch monitors. Their 1 GB graphics memory does nothing but heat the interior of their cabinets and consume power.

it should have a better min fps, less stuttering though i haven't seen any reviews recommending it.
oh and those saying 8600gt could not utilise 512mb of ram,if it were true i wouldn't be able to use 1gb ddr2 stick on my 64bit ram channel:rofl:
More VRAM won't improve the minimum FPS on an 8600GT. The 128-bit memory interface seriously cripples it, especially when AA is applied.
