I am planning to upgrade my system to CoreI7 and i have allready called for OCZ platinum DDR 3 kit. I have called for 2X6 GB kit from U.S. Now here is the confusion, one of my friend suggests that i should only install 6GB as installing 12GB wont make much of a difference in performance.

Please suggest me what shall i do.
Here is the system config i am planning to assemble.

Corei 920
Mobo: yet to decide.
RAM: 6 or 12 GB.........Please help
Tagan 800W modular.
Haf Full tower.
1.5 Tb x 2
Thor Hammer Cooler.

Thanks in advance.

Get 3*2GB kits

and yup. More than 6GB wont be utilized in anytime soon. To utilize more than 6GB, u ll be needing a quad SLI and game at 2560*1920, then also i doubt if itll use more than 6GB.

I have also called for GTX 275 for 11k from U.S...will be putting the system together by the end of this week so i am confused to keep the extra 6 GB kit or to sell it off.

Lemme know guys :)

I remember reading somewhere on this forum that if 12GB is 100% performance then 6GB is 99.97% and 3GB is 99.5%. So 6GB is more than enough. :) And try for a triple channel kit, I believe the i7 series is optimized for triple channel.

EDIT: Also, if you're going for 6GB+, make sure your OS is a 64 bit OS. I don't think a 32 bit OS recognizes more than 4GB.

opt for a triple channel 6GB rather than dual channel 12GB.

The former is surely much better on performance and on pocket.

Yeah i got a tripple channel kit. Guess it solves my query... Will be selling the extra 6GB and will save some money.

Thanks again

well m planning to get my i7rig

but m going for 3gb ram

wll 64bit win run properly on it ??? or do i have to go for 6gb kit ?? plz help

If you use photoshop and memory dependent software a lot then keep thje extra 12gb. It will all run in triple channel.

since wen is 12GB dual channel. have you lost it???

@OT, buy 6gb. more than enuf

^^Yes, it will be fine. Any 32bit operating system cannot detect and make use of RAM which is more than 3.5GB and also there isn't much performance enhancement if RAM size increased.

If you are going to use a 64bit OS, then go for 6/12GB. Practically 12GB doesn't make a lot of difference over 6GB at the present moment, but it makes sense to get 6GB (3x2GB) over 3GB (3x1GB). With a 3x2GB Kit, You can upgrade to 12GB when you want to without having have to sell of the existing kit. That's not possible with a 3GB Kit.
