Laptops Dell 1520 - With or without complete cover

Am buying the Dell Inspiron 1520. The base config which is given on the website is for Rs. 40,650. Its pretty great but has only one year limited warranty. I called up atleast 6 different sales reps and none of them has been willing to give a single rupee of discount because they say the config is already in negative margin.

Finally after much negotiation one of the reps agreed to include 3 years complete cover for Rs. 4,350 extra. So now I can get either

1. Dell Inspiron 1520 with base config - 1 year limited warranty - Rs. 40,650/-
2. Dell Inspiron 1520 with base config - 3 year complete cover - Rs. 45,000/- (price without discount comes to about Rs. 50000)

Which of these should I go for. In other words, is 3 year complete cover with accidental damage worth Rs. 4,350/- extra?

While chatting with the Dell guy, I asked him whats to prevent a person from taking advantage of the complete cover and break his notebook after 2 and a half years and get a new one. He actually recommended I should do that for my own benefit and I will probably get an even better config which is popular at that time. But to just remember to break it before the warranty expires :hap2: I was stunned (and impressed) that he was so frank about this on the company phone and did not take a diplomatic route about it.

Guess they figure less than 5-10% people will actually remember to do something like this or will take the risk with their well configured notebook.

Hi ,

I am also planing to buy 1520 as i need XP on my laptop. Do you know anything about their post sales serfice in mumbai? I have never owned a Dell and am not usre if i am taking a correct decision or not. How's the quality of serice ? do they really come to your site if you need their help ? please let me know everything you know , thanks !

Edit to Original Post (Whay am I not getting the edit button on OP itself?): I surfed around on the web about the accidental damage thing and it seems I would be in a morally ambiguous area and committing insurance fraud if I intentionally damage it (kinda obvious now that I read it). But again in a prestigious website such as the consumerist, there's an article called "22 Confessions Of A Former Dell Sales Manager" which recommends doing just that.

Link 1 - Highly against intentional damage comparing it to theft - Dell No-Fault Warranty - Tech Support Guy Forums

Link 2 - Recommends intentional damage (Read point no. 3) Insiders: 22 Confessions Of A Former Dell Sales Manager

@Amol

Even I am going for 1520 solely because they don't have an XP option in 1420.

As far as the service is concerned, I haven't had any personal experience with Dell, but most people on Indian forums keep raving about it, esp. as compared to other companies. And you being in Mumbai is going to get you even better on-site service I s'pose. I am from a town in Bihar and even here they claim, they send their engineers by the next day.

Hi Friend ,

I was just going through some threads and found that this 1520 is heavier than the 1420 but as i need XP i think i am suffering here. I have also checked Dell to HP comparison and they are saying that Dell has marginally better performance but HP ahs the looks so now i an really confused , i also checked TOSHIBA but they are expensive compared to Dell

hey guy even i brought a 1520 recently n the sales guys were offerin good discounts.....( many oders in this site say that u can bargain down 4-5k from the price mentioned on the websit....n u can also include in a lot of freebies lik extended warranty, a mouse may etc at no extra costs..... i got a discount of 3k a mouse and 1 yr warranty extension... got the 2 yrs dell care plan at no extra costs...). vaise afaik....3 yrs complete cover in 4350 sounds cheesy...go for it!!!!!!!!!!!

they hav a lot of clauses in both the 'complete cover' agreement as well as 'the complete cover guard' agreement.....n if they donn com up wid ny evidence after a serious scrutiny which they r gonna do in any case that u have damaged yr notebook intentionally..... they r gonna replace it...but do it at yr own risk... donn just listen to the rep guy...he has nothin to do wid u n yr notebook once he's sold it to u....till then he will just be wantin to sound as much yr wel wisher as possible..... so that u book it thru him...

and hey....for 1 thing....donn queston dell's service..... thats 1 area in whch they top d industy....... u wonn be gettin any oder brand givin u as good service...n so to say...peace of mind......

and amol..... i donn thin the 1520 is that heavy that its gonna compromise on portability.... on the looks department i agree hp has real gr8 looks( compare it to 1520...... not to a vaio...hehe).
