From Dell's Press Release

In the enterprise, we will launch new ninth generation servers featuring Intel's Woodcrest microprocessors. Dell will also introduce new AMD Opteron processors in our multi-processor servers by the end of the year offering a great new technology to our customers at the high-end of our server line.

Dell, up until today, had been famous for supporting Intel processors exclusively. Many have said that Dell holds an exclusive relationship in exchange for price cuts and marketing dollars. Dell founder Michael Dell, has been mainly vague about Dell's support for AMD processors, never giving a clear direction.

Today marks a major milestone for Dell for and the industry in general. AMD is also enthusiastic about Dell's decision to offer AMD processors in its systems. "We welcome Dell, and Dell customers, to the world of AMD64," said Marty Seyer, senior vice president for AMD's Commercial Business team. Previously, DailyTech reported that Dell had acquired gaming computer company Alienware, which produced both AMD and Intel systems. Michael Dell was questioned after the Alienware purchase, on whether or not Dell would start shipping AMD systems. Dell however, continued to be vague.

Dell CEO Kevin Rollins sure played things down, mentioning "it's a fairly small category in terms of units," and that "we will still be launching this year a broad line of Intel products."

Is this the begining AMD was waiting for?? May be Yes

EDIT: DID NOT SEE [LAZZY ME] News! Sorry :P

LOL looks like Dell finally grew some brains in their head after seeing those tumbling profit margins :P. I wonder what happened to that "Hell Freezes Over" comment of one of their execs .

Looks like a last ditch effort from Dell. The company has been loosing a lot of market share in the server segment to the likes of HP who have been selling multi processor Opteron based systems for some time now!
Looks like this is AMDs ticket to actually accelerate their inroads to the server segment and desktop segment.

Still after all the hype about this news, what percentage of their sales is gonna be amd. With them selling high end servers only, my guess is they'll still sell 99% intel.

My post seems to have been posted three times for some reason :S Mods can u please delete this and the other two

It's finally getting into the Brains of Dell People, what mistake they had done over the years by not providing AMD based Desktops and Workstations.

Its about time DELL adopts AMD  . I wonder where were DELL brains at when they decided to adopt Gaming PCs.

Well according to Dell, they will only be building single CPU AMD servers. The multi-CPU servers will still be Xeons. So you can bet that 1xx opti’s will go up in price and be harder to find.
But still Opteron is better then Xeon until going 4way. Once u go 4-way its Xeon that takes the crown.

Yup i m pretty sure.
Nope, it is the other way round. Dell will use the Opterons in the high-end MP segment; not in 1P or 2P systems.

And, the Xeons hold their own against the Opties in lesser socket configs, the Opterons trounce them as the number of cores/sockets go up.

Dell-AMD Deal

AMD's Opteron processors will make their premiere in Dell's high-end, multiprocessor servers, it was announced yesterday during Dell's quarterly earnings report.

Intel Xeon processors are somewhat competitive in the single- and dual-processor (1P and 2P) arena; but for customers that need to scale even further upward, not only is Opteron perceived as the clear leader, but it doesn't really have competition from Xeon.

I meant to say that Dell will not make MP servers with "Dual Core" opties, just those Single core ones atleast for now. The Dual core Servers from dell only features Xeon

^^Heres what u said.

you said single cpu amd servers, not single core and then u say u meant they'll sell only single core cpu's. seems like ur a highly confused guy and all that is bullshit anyway. why will dell not feature dual core opterons??? Id love to see your source that makes u so sure.

and that last line is absolute crap. It is indeed like mjp said the other way around. research before u post mate.
