Hi All..

I use a Dell Insp 15 with a 6 cell battery. Have 2 year complete cover and all.
I use the laptop always connected to power.

Last night when i was playing NFS HP, to be exact watching the cutscenes the laptop just turned off abruptly. I tried turning it on few times. the laptop turns off exactly at windows start up splash screen.

I tried with just battery and without connecting to mains. No use.

Then I tired with battery removed and just mains and the laptop turned on. :S.

What happened?. battery is goner?

Anyways this morning, i just connected the battery and tried turning it on. And it was fine.

Whats happening?

Any help appreciated.

Same thing happened to me while playing Batman:Arkham Asylum on my Dell XPS 1530. But in my case, it didn't work with the battery next day also :(

Had to buy another battery.

As far as i can tell it is an issue of overheating.your system reached critical temp and the motherboard shut off itself before it got fried.then after some time the system temp cooled down a little and it was able to start again(doesn't matter whether the battery was in or out-just a coincidence). What you need to do is to clean the vents, fan etc. What i can guess from your description is that you have never cleaned out the dust from your system since you bought it.Dust WILL GET PROBLEMATIC eventually.you need to clean it or get it cleaned fro a technician if you are not upto the task yourself.till then i would advise you to use your laptop on power saving mode which also means no gaming.hope it helps.and i would appreciate if you follow up and tell us your experience with the vents and cleaning.i guess a lot of people with 1-2 yr old laptops will face this issue in summers specially as most don't use cooling pads.

This is a 6 month old laptop.. :S.

Anyways will check for dust clogs.

I had the exact same problem ( Inspiron 15R, mobo with 512MB 5470, 9 cell)

temps were pretty high (70ish) and the bottom was pretty hot, and would hang occasionally after long usage ( I dont turn mine off), and it would shut down after a few seconds regardless of where i was - windows boot, bios screen, memory diagnostic - removing the battery did not help either. the longer i waited, the more time it took to shut down. Had convinced a cc rep that it was overheating, and he had authorized a mobo replacement ( a bit too soon in fact, i told him it might be dust, but he said no, its probably a mobo problem. I said whatever you say is fine by me doc :D)

over the time it took to ship the board, I updated the bios to the latest, and it got fixed. Hasnt happened for a few months.I told the local dude to send back the mobo. Still not sure if it was a mobo problem. You can prolly talk their cc into it, but try updating the bios. And get a laptop cooler

Re: Dell Inspiron - Turns OFF at windows startup - Without battery ok - Battery issue

Update your BIOS & see if your Laptop is getting heated around the keyboard & touchpad before going off. If it does then dust has clogged your heatsink or something is blocking it.

Will update the bios and yeas it does gets heated. and yea a laptop cooler is necessary

even if 6 months old dust can be a problem especially in an environment like ours where 15 mins after cleaning dust is back! it also depends on your usage habits i.e. if you are using the laptop sparingly in dust free environments and keeping it in a bag most of the time,it will take longer for dust to become a problem.but if you use the laptop like a desktop i.e. keeping it on a desk all the time, taking it everywhere, using on the bed(lint gets sucked in from bed sheets etc) you can have this problem much earlier.also depends on the laptop design,i have seen quite a few inspirons with this heating problem.so tell us if your problems are resolved after bios update or cleaning.

m-jeri, what's the update on this?

A friend of mine with an Inspiron R ( there are a lot of em at college) had the same problem, and he called dell. the tech arrived to replace the mobo, only to find that it was dead ( dell using crappy refurb parts these days, thats another story). anyway it turns out that the thermal paste had given up the ghost. A little thermal paste, and it was idling at 35degrees in the mumbai heat ( mine is 55ish in bangalore)
