PC Peripherals Dell SE198WFP Gaming query

Hi,

Simple and age old query i believe. I am thinking about buying this monitor. My primary purpose will be movies/gaming with 25:75 priority :)

The thing is, can i play all games on this without stretching? I know that some games have WS support so no issues there. But for games without WS support, is it possible to play with say black borders at a 4:3 resolution? And is it worthwhile? I mean no blurring etc?

Graphics card: 7900GTX
so should be able to handle stuff at 1440X900 for most newer games.

I know that some ppl are ok with horizontal stretching and stuff, but i kinda dont like that and would prefer the normal look :)

Else would just go for a 4:3 LCD or stay with my current 15" CRT @ 1024 for some more time :ashamed:

Yep

Nvidia provides fixed aspect ratio scaling. You can specify that in the nvidia control panel, and when you play, the image will stretch vertically (if its a 4:3 aspect ratio) and will display black borders on the sides.

OT -I have a Dell E228WFP - its great for games, movies, and even work, no issues with ghosting etc. Viewing angles are terrible, but you already know that when you buy a TN :) .

so basically it will display black bars at the sides and the game in proper 4:3? k, thx :D

If someone else can confirm this with the 19" thats even cool :) cos my only purpose is gaming and wont compro on that ;)

@techie- My roommate's got the same monitor and I just cannot understand why you or anyone for that matter would want to play with dark borders????

The monitor's one of the best in its class (probably the best) and games look absolutely fabulous. He's got a 7600 gt so not all the games at high resolutions but so far he's installed CS 1.6(yea, at 1440 X 900 :) ), Source, TF2, F.E.A.R, FIFA (07,08),PES(5,6 n 08),Trackmania, CnC 3 etc and all of them look amazing!

If you know someone who has the monitor, then give it a shot first. With your card, even the resolution will not be a problem.

I would force this monitor on anyone who wants to buy a 19 incher. Period. :eek:hyeah:

Look, the fact is that i got nothin against widescreen games..but only so long as the screen is not 'stretched' in anyway. If the widescreen look is maintained with proper display then no issues. But if any characters etc are stretched in any way then me got BIG problem with it. So thats why started this thread..to check up on this. Whats ur conclusion? ;)

Totally get your point.. You don't want to play cs with the cts and ts looking like midgets :p

Trust me, that doesn't happen. Obviously, it takes a day or two getting used to, but you are gonna love the widescreen after that. :eek:hyeah:

I am definitely going to buy a widescreen next year (the 22 incher if Raghu's GO is still on otherwise a 19 incher:p ). But I would still recommend you to go and check out a widescreen monitor before investing. They are pretty common these days and am sure you'll find one.:)

IMO, you should not go for anything less than this 19 incher. It's too good a deal at this price. The picture quality is unbeatable. Even the divx movies look great and the viewing angle is pretty good.

yup..u got it :D else would prefer a 4:3 19" rather than the midgets ;) but those are more exp tooo :(

so WS it most prob is....thats all i wanna check...else got no probs with the 19" WS. had bought my cousin a 1930WM viewsonic so have used it couple of times. colors obviously a TN is not as good but i guess i can live with that :)

have got some friends in dell so checking to see if i can swing something ;) ll prob buy around Dec tho :)

I don't like playing Starcraft/Starfleet command 3 stretched, that's why the 4:3 AR scaling is very useful :) . You haven't got any alternative there, they don't look as good in 16:10 (stretched starships and stretched raynor :( ) . There are many other games which won't natively support 16:10, unless you can add that resolution, the game will run in 4:3 (and if scaling is off, you have it stretched). Also, many old movies are 4:3 or, not available in WS - people who watch those will have to live with black bars or wide actors :D .

guys,

Can someone explain me the difference between a Dell E198WFP and the SE198WFP 19 inch widescreen monitor? The SE is available in 10k, whereas the E198WFP is hovering around 14K.

Thanks
