Gonna have to get my Display soon. I thought won't have to create this poll, But I guess I am still in a dilemma. :ashamed:

Usage is gonna be PC & Console Gaming , Movies and Work. (I might also double it up as a TV). Needs to have the best viewing angles and color reproduction. Lots of connectivity options as well. Yeah, I am on an 20" IPS Panel currently and have a massive Bias towards them. :P

I will be using this display for the next 5 years.

Options

Dell U2410 (27.5k)

+ One of the best consumer grade 24" IPS Displays around (and the only one available in India)

+ Lots of connectivity

+ 16:10 aspect ratio (Don't have anything against 16:9, but prefer having 16:10 ratio)

- 24" is mainstream display size now and would soon be outdated by larger sizes

- 1920 x 1200 is a mainstream resolution these days.

Dell U2711 (41~42.5k)

+ One of the best consumer grade 27" IPS displays around (and the only one available in India)

+ Lots of connectivity

+ 2560 x 1440 resolution on a 27" Panel. This resolution is probably going to be next step after 1080p. So the display should be upto standards for the next 5 years.

- Massive cost at over 40k.

Others

Suggest any other new options that I should be aware of.

- Please don't suggest cheap 24/23" TN Panels.

- Please don't suggest a 30" IPS

Will the 2 x 4850 be able to drive 2560 x 1440? Or are you planning to up that as well?

U2711 is the way to go. That resolution in a 27" leads to about the lowest dot pitch on any monitor.

You could be playing a game @ 1280x720 on one side of your monitor and have a cricket/football match on the other side. (Windows 7 snap was made for monitors like these).

A negative could be that driving games at native resolution would definitely take more than a 4850CF

if the choice given between the two, then no doubt a 27".

point to consider if you have space - stick to your current 20" monitor and get a full hd lcd/plasma tv for console / movie. it makes a massive difference in the overall experience. you could also use it for pc gaming if you have a wireless kb and mouse

if i were you, i would wait till august until the new Ultra Sharp line comes out, which is worth it,why spend so much and buy 2 year old model while a few months wait you will have current lineup and be tension free for 2 more years

My Sig is outdated. :ashamed: Here is a gist of my new rig along with 3DMark 11 score.

3DMark115.png

Core i7 2500k @ 4.5GHz (Can also run this CPU at 5GHz stable with 1.35V)

16GB DDR3 CL8 @ 1600MHz

2 x MSI R6950 TwinFrozr II which can run at 900MHz/1300Mhz stable for 24/7 use.

I had initially hoped to go for 2 x MSI 6970 Lightening, but they were not available at the time, so I had to go with 6950 Twin Frozr II's in the end. But when overclocked they perform as good as a pair of 6970's, so I guess they are beefy enough for 2560 x 1440. In any case, If I feel the need, I can also get new GPU's when HD7000's hit the market.

The newer Ultrasharps are going to be based around the e-IPS Panels unlike the current U2410 and U2711 which are based around the H-IPS. Also, it doen't seem Dell has any plans to release a new 27" Model.

Actually, I thought on those lines as well. Infact I even had the option of buying an used 42" Plasma for 30k from a colleague who is permanently leaving India. I decided against it as it is not Full HD capable. I then toyed with the idea of getting a brand new LCD within a 50k budget, but the thing is that the display would have to be kept in a different room than my own. So even I use it for my PS3 and XBOX 360 gaming, I would be stranded with the 20" for PC Gaming.

With that sort of GPU prowess, I guess a 27" is the way to go. Maybe you could wait a bit since Dell has announced their 2012 lineup. Not sure if it has improved over the present U2711WFP though.

PS: Btw nice to see a poll for the display. :P

If money isn't an issue, I would go with a 27/30" IPS panel and Dell isn't second to any other in this category :)

^^what gannu said

dell has kinda announced their 2012 lineup and it should be hitting shores in a while

might be worth a look if your in no hurry :)

^^There doesn't seem to be any new 27" models being introduced.

A couple of questions

1. Has anyone in Hyderabad seen the Dell U2711 on sale anywhere locally?

2. What is the best price that I can get U2711 for in India. Has anyone seen this for 40k or lower any where?

Lord, don't you know of anyone in your friends circle who can hook you up with a Dell EPP? Might be a good offer I tell you.

I got my 2407 2 years back from a friend through the EPP and got it off for 25k. I did not want the 2408WFP since it had a whole lot of problems associated with it and sourced the rev. A04 of the display. :P

Or look for someone with an active IEEE membership. IEEE members were automatically eligible for Dell EPP benefits last I read.

Theres nothing called EPP for Monitor, only system purchases are eligible for EPP,

Just dell employees get EPP benefits, others Get Meager 5% corporate discount for non dell employees , which people consider EPP but its not

Will suggest a bigger screen, like a 28incher or a 32 incher Bravia or the likes, but are you sure you want a IPS??? Can you maybe have a visit to Lamington Road and have a look at those TN Panels, I would not be fine with spending double the price just for the panel.

Apple Cinema Display 27"?
:P
No inputs options, No hardware controls, No features and nothing expect the IPS Panel itself to justify it as a premium display and selling at an insane 57k? No Thanks :P

hehehehe yeah, I remember man, :D

And actually thats the most logical and sensible option, untill and unless your work involves lots of graphic editing.

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, if I get a HDTV, It would be used primarily as a TV in the living room. I don't have much space in my own room and LCD TV's would not be good for use at such close range.

As for IPS Panels, I prefer them mainly because it was the visual quality of an IPS Panel equipped Apple Cinema Display that has ever made me switch to LCD's in the first place. Prior to that, TN Panels skewed my entire impression of LCD Monitors. I thought of them as poor quality displays whose only advantage is space and I kept buying good CRT's even when every one else was buying 17/19" LCD's. If it were for TN Panels, I would probably be still on CRT's. While I keep hearing from many that TN Panels have improved a lot over the years, I had used a 20" TN Panel based iMac at office and the IPS based 2007WFP at home and the differences are glaringly visible. Even now I hate the quality of the TN Panel based Dell LCD that I use at office currently. Surprisingly TN based LCD TV's have never bothered me probably because when viewed from a distance, the differences are not so visible.

I don't like shelling out money just for the heck of it and I don't mind buying a TN Panel if it is really good. That is why I left the "Other" option open in hope that there might be some entrant in the market that I don't know about. But I am hard pressed to find any 27" TN based display that offers decent quality and features that I want. If you know of any 27/28" Monitor or any 32~40" LCD TV (within in 50k) that can be used at close quarters (possibly as a Monitor as well) then do let me know. I am not going to expect them to be as good as IPS displays, but If I am spending over 20k/25k for a display, It should at least be worth the price.

For the moment, I am inclined towards U2711 only and if I don't find any other worthwhile option, that is what I will be going for.
