Given the fact that just about everyone seems to be launching new notebooks or laptops at this time of the year, Dell's decided to jump on this bandwagon as well and unveiled a couple of interesting upgrades to its XPS 17 and 15 models.

According to the company's statement, users who opt for these new XPS machines will be able to choose from a wide variety of either Sandy Bridge or Huron River CPU options, namely either quad-core or dual-core i3, i5 or i7 processors (Dell also points out that the Sandy Bridge platforms are not affected by the already infamous SATA bug).

Furthermore, the new XPS systems from Dell can now be equipped with Full HD displays WLED display (1920 x 1080 resolution), while the XPS 17 can also accommodate a 3D FHD panel.

Plus, as an extra bonus, the models featuring the Quad-Core Sandy Bridge i7 CPU also offer Wi-Di 2.0 technology, meaning that they can easily stream Full HD content to any HDTV, with the help of a special adapter.

Multiple GPU options are also available, including here up to NVIDIA GT 540M with 2GB RAM for the XPS 15 and up to NVIDIA 555M with 3GB RAM for the XPS 17l, while NVIDIA's Optimus model is also present in all the models, except for the XPS 17 featuring the 3D display, that requires the discrete card to work at all times.

Additional features provided by both new XPS systems include the built-in JBL speakers with Waves Maxx audio technology, not to mention a 720p webcam module and USB 3.0 connectivity.

According to Dell, their updated XPS 17 is available starting right now across the North American, Latin American and European markets starting at around 900 US dollars, while the XPS 15 will only be available across the US for the time being (with the rest of the world to follow at some point), starting at around 1050 US dollars.

oh c'mon, can we have the HD6000 GPUs???? C'mon DELL...
Optimus? Nvidia has loads of design wins due to this and people would prefer to have a Nvidia Optimus enabled high power even if the GPU is slightly less powerful.
Its even more useful now since the SB Quads too have IGP and can utilize Optimus in the high end $1000-2000 gaming rigs that uses quads.

Unless AMD/ATI has something equivalent to Optimus that can switch automatically between IGP and GPU Nvidia will definitely dominate this segment.

Edit: AMD/ATI too seems to have something called 'Power Express switchable graphics' which they claim to be Optimus equivalent :D No major reviews out about it though. Hoping that its as good or better than Optimus so that there is a good competition in mobile segment GPU's too :)

When HP first told me they had chosen to go with AMD Radeons for the line, I was confused: at this juncture, NVIDIA's 500M series with Optimus technology seemed like a clear win and a no-brainer. But AMD seems to have an ace up their sleeve with Power Express switchable graphics, a feature you can actually find on notebooks on retail shelves right now. It's perplexing as to why AMD isn't promoting this more since it puts them back on parity with NVIDIA in the mobile sector, but we'll have to get a Power Express-equipped notebook in house before we can say more.

I have bough the XPS 15 on Day 1 on India Release.. .And never regretted for anything...

If anyone wanna buy new version,I say just go for it...

They dont sell new models in poor country like india..
They sell their outdated technology in india..
Indian version of dell xps is far behind..
Even alienware models are with outdated graphics....
I'm also planning to buy a laptop around 55k....
Please suggest one or should i wait...

I dont expect XPS 15 R2 to be available here before April, as the date for US itself is 3/17 at the earliest.

But I dont know whether Dell will consider that they have no XPS stock left to sell here in India , their website doesnt show XPS configs anymore. We'll come to know whether Dell plans to continue selling old models or new ones in a week or so, but I hardly expect them to sell it in India before or alongside US (afterall most people here dont even bother whats inside the chassis anyway)

AMD have had switchable graphics for atleast 2 years now AFAIK.

However their first implementation (that I use myself) takes a second or two with the display blanking while it switches.

The Optimus implementation is smooth and instantaneous. But I hear AMD has a newer implementation out - probably this Power Express stuff, thats just as quick as Optimus.

Yeah i knew that but earlier was manual switching IINM. For most its as good as not switching and display going blank is not acceptable for many. ATI was sort of pioneer in thought process but Nvidia bet them in implementation and had huge no. of design wins and its about time ATI/AMD caught up with them to bring back some parity and competition :)

@compaddict : Have they upgraded the GPU to HD5650 in the Inspiron 14 R. Wow :O Never though they will do that with the 14"

^^ yeah, the GPU us better than those bunch of nVidia GT420/425 (is 0 and 5 a joke really?) and cheaper than GT540(is it Ti also?) models

My wishlist for Inspiron:

1. 15.6" version gets these

2. Sandy Bridge Duals

3. An option for NO WIN7, c'mon I have 2 Windows 7 copes already with 2 laptops WTH!

4. HD6xxx the new 480 shader ones(which are meant to work in tandem with Llano)

AMD might pull out a Ace with Llano is laptops too. :) Imagaine a HD5570or similar IGP of the Llano and a discrete HD6570 working in hybrid XFire :D Budget gaming at its best for laptops.
Even with discrete graphics Llano will end up fast than the Sandy :) Now only if they get the power consumption right like they did with the first set of Fusion APU's and the AthlonII Pxx.

People think AMD sucks a lot of battery and runs hot on notebooks(Which was true couple of years back as power efficiency sucked)
But look at the relative battery life charts.
The PII 340+HD4250 is as efficient as the i5 520M+HD IGP.
The intel may be clocked higher but then its 32nm fab compared to the PII 340's 45nm.
If AMD pull off a good show in this respect the $400-$550 AMD notebooks should rock for budget entry level gaming :D (Notebooks with IGP only)

My thread got moved from Laptop Buying Advice... :O
Yup. That section is meant for buying advice and this is a news about laptop lineup refresh. So mods moved it to the correct section.

No it switches automatically based on it being plugged in / on battery. But yeah the display blanking is a bit of a bother.

The stock factory install would even switch between integrated/dedicated if a 3D app was fired up, however I clean formatted and wasn't able to figure out how they were doing that.

Oops. I thought it was manual from ATI till now :ashamed: But seems like the drivers sucked after all ;)
