Is it worth paying the price difference between the two?
Lattitude E 5500, c2d7250,80gb hd,4 gb ram,x4500,3 yrs complete cover,win xp sp-2 cost 69k/
Vostro 1510 c2d 8100,4 gb ram,120 gb hd,8400 gs n vidia,3 yrs complete cover,no o/s. cost 58k/

is E 5500 worth the difference, would be really helpfull if someone can explain the difference between two.

The latitude series are high end business laptops. Build quality will be better. Same with service etc. You will probably deal with a separate department servicing only latitudes so turnaround etc will be faster. Worth the extra money? IMO no

The latitude is designed for companies who purchase stuff in bulk. and will contain features making it easy for IT de[departments to administer the remotely etc etc.

vostro build quality is a little better than inspiron in my opinion.I have a vostro 1500 bought last year from US which is working fine without any issues so far.

Thanks for Inputs!
I am going in for E5500,Checked out Vostro At a retail outlet, the build quailty,i mean like palm rest area, and keyboard left lot to be desired.Vostro that i configured is costing me 59k,so doesn't make much of difference eventully.
HP is not for me,as i need custmisaton and three yr complete cover, more over i don't see and good laptop black in color from HP in recent days!

Cheers!

IMO vostro was merely a naming convention which was used to differentiate between 800mhz fsb and 667mhz older inspirons. Please correct me if I'm wrong, thats what I can remember.

Also latitudes and or any product, if ordered directly from online via the home and home office site will have the get support from the same support group as inspirons etc, if you buy it via employee purchase/ higher education or such programs only then the support group is different.

Back to topic, I have worked with both latitudes & inspirons, and I dont find them physically different at all, the only difference I noticed, that there was no dell software crap pre installed in the latitude, so go with the cheaper one!

Err...the Vostro is actually a different series of laptops entirely.

I just read on wiki (coz I couldn't find vostro on dell's us site), that they were re branded dell's business line. As I said, I cant find them anymore on the dell's us site, so are they not being sold anymore?

Business Notebooks & Laptop Computers - Dell

Thanks! but I'm pretty sure that if you buy a product from say "home and home office", you would get the normal support. You have to go through a different channel to get better support.

Exactly :P

The Vostro is a business series laptop, so it DOESNT come under Home and Home office category. Check under 'Small and Medium Business' :D Separate division, so support will be separate.

Enjoy :)

Like I said above, they are all still available. Its very much an active line, with new models still being introduced.

Business Notebooks & Laptop Computers - Dell

They are still very much there. Build is better than inspiron since they are targeted at a business audience.

IS it possible to buy DELL laptop from DELL's US site using a Indian credit card and shipping it to US local address.
Then a friend of mine can carry it over here for me.
Any inputs!

Any thoughts on this??

Silver color on touch pad does come off after some use, even if you take good care of it.I have had similar problem too. That's why i have made up my mind to stick to color black,Silver goes good when it's new but after sometime it's other way around.

1. I have latitudes in the office and I find them better than newer inspirons I have seen. Maybe its the newer inspirons where Dell has vut down on quality?

2. @ tanvirgill: Sirji, you cant pay dell by Indian CC, they ll need a US CC. So you will need to request your friend or a relative to pay for you and pay them when they get it to India.

Another smaall questions
Will there be warranty transfer issues, cause the laptop if bought with US CC won't be billed on my Name. Will i be able to transfer the warranty when the laptops reaches india?
