Have a quick query. I have a cheque from SBI, Mumbai made in my wife's name. I need to deposit this in my wife's ICICI account, which is in Pune branch. But, I will be depositing it in some branch in Indore, 'coz neither of us are now in Pune. Confusing, I know. :S
I'd like to know how do I go about it, and what are the charges expected. Can I just fill the pay-in slip with the cheque details and put it in a drop-box, or should I visit a branch? I'd prefer the second option, 'coz the amount on the cheque is close to 70K and I do not want to put it in some random drop-box (is there some form of acknowledgement while putting cheques in drop boxes?). Please let me know.

There is no special procedure for outstation cheques. You can drop it in a cheque drop box or submit it over the counter.

And there maybe a Rs 50 charge for clearing since its a outstation cheque but mostly it will be done by Speed Clearing where its considered as a local cheque since SBI is core banking enabled.

I have deposited a SBI Delhi cheque at Cochin and received next day credit and there were no additional charges.

1) You can deposit a cheque into your ICICI account at any ICICI branch.
2) Of late many branches have done away with the concept of a 'high value' cheque, and would redirect you to drop it in the collection box inside the branch. I have done this recently for an amount greater than what you have mentioned.
3) If the SBI cheque is an 'at par'/'inter city' cheque (also known as Core Banking in case of SBI), there won't be any additional clearance charges, else appropriate charges would apply.

Thanks for all the replies. Deposited the cheque at a local branch of ICICI a little while ago.

@agantuk: They redirected me to the drop box within the bank. I said I'm not going to do that, and that they should accept the cheque over the counter, which they did without any fuss. (I guess you just need to ask them). The SBI cheque was not an on-par one, so I was told that clearance would take anywhere between 7 days and 21 days. Did not bother asking them the clearance charges, but the website states that it would be Rs.150. :)

As an update, the cheque was cleared and cash deposited in my account today evening. They had charged Rs.165.xx as cheque clearing charges. Thanks all for the help. :)
