Ok, so dad totaled the family petra on the highway last week. (horrible accident involving a truck driver who took a turn on the highway without warning resulting in an upside down petra :ashamed: ) Both occupants had only scratches due to seat belts and the good build quality of the petra

So now a new car is required.

Sedan since mostly highway driving and a sedan is much safer, simple.

Diesel only. Dads office is 60kms away, one way and he does take the car like 2-3 days a week, + extra driving on the weekends. So running is heavy. + hes always kept diesels and wants one :P, starting from a modded 1000 with a 1700CC nissan engine -> Uno D -> petra D.

Budget not that big an issue though running/maintainence costs shud obviously be less. Ideally, would prefer something 5-7L

Oh, and the indigo is out, dad doesnt like it, doesnt want it.

No driver, he ll be driving it 99% of the time.

Currently looking at the Logan.

..........so lets have it :ohyeah:

Verna i think he ll look at. :)

Dzire? Me not so comfy, considering it still has the same swift engine in a larger car.

Fiesta maintainence is costlier i think :ashamed:

Mind u, I dont know much, asking him to test drive all options first of course :)

Hyundai Verna.

+Looks

+Mileage

+Luxurious

+Low afterward maintainance

+Good resale value

-A little bumpy

-Harsh on ride

-Not much confidence inspiring behind the wheel

Logan

+Comfortable

+Mileage

+More bang for less buck

-Looks

-After sales service might be a issue

Dzire I wont recommend. Its new and still much untested. Rear seat is as crampy as it gets.

Fiesta is good. But if it's good, verna's better.

If you can buy a second hand good Octavia, I will really recommend it. Although the service is a little costly, it has a overall lower ownership rate.

If he doesn't mind the slight understeer, the Verna pwns everything else in that segment easily.

You might have to go a little higher than 7L for the Diesel, but worth every penny!

Oh, and don't forget to opt for the model with factory fitted ABS :)

there is nothing untested in swift desire.

it just same old swift diesel with a boot , nothing else.

swift diesel had won many accolades already due to one of the best diesel engine in the class.

and you'll have to wait eons to get a swift/Dzire Diesel. Thats what put me off buying one. I decided to buy another rig and some ICE for the car with all the savings

+1 for the Verna Diesel.

Also, Greenie was saying that Verna > Swift Dzire.

verna is a very, very fast boat :P was following one on the highway. Goes like a stink on the straights , but at the curves it rolled quite a lot, so much that the guy who was ripping it otherwise slowed down to speeds slow enough for me to catch up :P

Dzire is a good car. pity it looks butt ugly , and there is a long line for one

What luxury do you get in a verna? I really don't see any. Its just another econobox. And a swift is cramped in the rear and octy is not? You gotta be kidding me. The rear seat in the octy is ridiculous. If the service costs are high, how is the overall ownership costs low :bleh:. Also skodas are not known to be very reliable so buying a used one is calling for trouble.

The best bang for the buck for 5-6 lacs is a slightly used Elantra CRDi. Tonnes of space, a bomb of an engine, decent handling, all the essential safety stuff like airbags, ABS, even Traction Control, really cheap spares and finally since resale value is really low, you get excellent deals on used examples.

Its a pity people pay more for a verna than this car and call it value for money . Someone on tbhp called a verna a missile at the end of its flight and that even boats are better handlers :P

if budget wouldnt have been an issue i think nothing comes close to Optra Magnum .many reviews says its one of the finest diesel car and even a friend bought it..

but i think its a bit expensive.and out of your budget..see if you can convenience your dad..as it's gonna be a one time investment :).

check this out :

Test drive : Optra Magnum tcdi diesel - Team-BHP

PS: does anyone know how much does the optra magnum cost on road ? the lower model ..

^ Verna isn't really so bad for everyday city use Chaos. If you can live off the turbo lag (Which almost every diesel below the Laura has) its pretty okay.

The boat like characteristics are noticeable only when cornering at high speeds (Which is where handling is really tested lol, okay I admit :P)!

If you can hang on for maybe 2 months, the new 2008 Elantra will be out, but might be out of budget for you at around 10L.

Btw you guys, did you check the 2009 Corolla?! Mini Camry for 11L-ish, and this time a "proper" Toyota diesel too!

^^Thats the XRS. It'll come to india only in the petrol avatar without that body kit and the same old engine.

if waiting fr around 2-3 months is ok.. then i guess u can consider Fiat Linea

dzire i dont think is a good choice..

waiting for 6 months for a car makes no sense!

Get the Fully Loaded Logan...

Highway mikeage around 25kmpl with A/C....

Broke the record for fuel efficiency....

When did I talked about engine? The engine is same. Engine won't make any difference as the weight is also only 30Kgs+ from swift. I am talking about the roll and weight distribution.

1. Swift's back is crampier than Octy.

2. Octy has only 2 services a year not four like others.

3. Verna is luxorious when compared to Indigo and DZire (if we leave the Indigo top model)

4. Skoda's are not reliable? lol... dont know about that much. Owned one elegante and one RS. Might be that mine had production problems. :P Just joking...

Elantra is a white elephant. Own one, and you will know in a period of a month that you shot yourself in the foot. It is the only car of hyundai stable which doesn't have a resale value.

Don't wanna get in a debate. Just my 2 cents. :)

Hehe it has two services a year but each service costs 3-4 times as much as any other car :P. How does it make it cheaper? Also what makes a verna more luxurious than a dzire? Care to elaborate? Or is it just beige interiors from italy .

I know three people in our office who own the elantra - two of them have the crdi and one has the petrol. Not a single issue so far and the car has kept up well. Not being popular or not having a resale value has got nothing to do with how good a product is - if it were, britney spears would be the greatest musician on the planet .

Fiesta D- i have started disliking the Verna for it's handling and safety features or rather the lack of it. :)

And the Fiesta with the rear spoiler looks quite good from teh sides. :ashamed:
