I have heard that most cars launched in india are downgraded from the models launched in Europe and US. Is it true??

If its true, then why do they do so?? What are the changes basically made inorder to downgrade??Are their any differences in quality of material used(plastics, leathers, wood etc)??

My friend have a skoda superb and a Merc. C class. Do both the cars will be same in USA or UK??

P.S. Just curious to know about this as well as had a serious argument with friend on this topic :)

Mostly the interior plastics and fabrics will be sourced locally, and depending on the price bracket the quality might be lower to make the model competitive. And quite a few times the engines will be derated (lower power and torque) to satiate the "kitna deti hai" question that will invariably lurk at the back of your mind.

It comes down to the fact that barring "premium" cars, you can get away with a lower level of quality of materials in India compared to the "developed markets" so invariably you will get an slightly inferior product compared to us/europe.

CBU/CKD models will probably be at the same quality as the other global markets.

This is exactly what i was trying to explain to my friend but, he was just arguing that its impossible and all. I also heard this thing by some auto-expert on TV.

There is something called VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) for cars in US. Is there anything like that in India ?

Read in an auto man once that the engines were rated slightly lower (a diff of 5-6 points in PS and Nm figures) for India on account of the lower quality of fuel.

it depends on the manufacturer IIRC.. if you are buying a beemer (or beamer or w/e it is termed :P ) or any othe german trio, they basically will not compromise on the quality. CBU's mostly shouldn't be different as compared to the european counterparts. though, the evoque i own, comes with a slightly less gadgetry n trim as compared to the same model sold in the US/UK, considering the fact that it is a CBU, i was unhappy.. But those were minor changes so i just moved on :)
