Goin to buy a new pc the things in my mind are a 250gb hdd and a DVD writer with lightscribe the thing which is confuseing me is IDE and SATA? What is the diffrence between IDE and SATA which one is good for gaming and diffrence between their prices??

Which one to go for seagate or Western digit?
Which one to go for in optical drives with lightscribe?

All newer motherboards have support for SATA> IDE prices in fact might b a bit more cos of low supply :P Get SATA HDD. ROM u can get which ever u want. SATA is faster tho i dont think it makes thta much diff to a ROM drive. makes more diff to a HDD.

get the sata drives... between seagate nd wd, its again ur call... there will be opinion divided on the forum on this and you'll find an equal number of ppl supporting both brands.. so pick either.

and theres an asus model which has been mentioned as a good litescribe drive.

IDE 66mbps peak transfer rate
SATA 1 150mbps transfer rate
SATA 2 300mbps transfer rate
correct me if m wrong....
new boards support sata

for optical drives , there is no performance advantage in going sata.

but now as costs are similar , gofor sata for less clutter and better airflow and get rid of that master/slave crap.

for hdd u shuld gofor sata drives as they are faster, cheaper and u get better airflow/get rid of master/slave crap.

make sure ur mobo chipset(most modern chipset do) supports sata300 and ncq.

best hd now a days are 7200.11 series from seagate. (starts from 320gb)

Sata = Serial Advance Technology Attachment

IDE = Integrated Drive Electronics = ATA

SATA is a newer interface for HDD .. which has a data transfer speed of upto 3 Gbps.[Sata 2].while IDE is older technology has a slower data transfer speed ...+++ Sata ports are smaller and sleeker than fugly looking IDE cables :P

For more Info : AT Attachment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia \ Serial ATA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you want a recommendation about vendor.. WD has only Raptor as their best offering so if have the bucks go for it.. Else for normal hard disk I'll recommend Seagate 7200.11.

Lightscribe is a newer technology and its pretty hard to find lightscribe media.. There is no reason you should look for Lightscribe Optical Player.. It just print the label in Black/White colour in Lightscribe CD/DVD ..

This helped a lot now i m getting more clear. So u guys didnt told me about lightscribe burner. How much will it cost and which one to buy???

1. Spelling is different.

2. They look different.

Ummm cant think of more :ashamed:

The seagate 7200.10 250GB is the model you should get. Its a quiet drive and offers great performance. For gaming SATA is the way to go. With newer chipsets slowly phasing out IDE it makes sense to go for a SATA DVD-RW as well. Do not expect any performance benefits with the sata dvdrw's though.

I'm personally going for IDE DVD-RW as I want the six SATA ports on my board for HDDs. I'll need all of em as I'm going for 1 RAID array (possibly 2)+ 1 HDD for data and want to keep an option for expandability of my storage.

I don't see any reason not u use the IDE port on my board as there's no perf benifit from going SATA with a optical drive. Rounded IDE cables and proper cable management should give me the same benifit in airflow as a SATA cable for the ODD.

SATA was developed as a replacement to the thick ribbon cable of the PATA(or IDE as it is referred to by most even though IDE means something else and SATA is technically IDE only) interface.

It terms of speed advantage, SATA-I offers 3-5% more performance vs PATA and even that is debatable. The major advantage of SATA is the small width of the SATA data cable that prevents clutter in your cabinet.
The disadvantages of SATA are poor design of the connector which leads to poor mating with the SATA receiver port on your motherboard and probably headaches with installing Win XP(XP does not have native SATA HDD support).

However, the industry has been moving towards SATA since last year with motherboard manufacturers providing a single PATA receiver port on their motherboards.

thats an advantage of having a nvidia mobo cuz afaik the ide controller is native, the pos jmicron controller on most of the p35/x38 chipsets behaves really weird (atleast for most of the mobos used by me) hdds behave fine and optical drives read fine but burning a dvd is a no go:@ . i use a pci ide/sata card along with the 6 ich9r sata ports for my 5 hdds and 4 optical drives and have disabled the jmicron controller.

Hey apollyon i guess ur advice stumpped me cand understand all the techeis term can this be written in a more simplified language?
