Yes i can say S5 is crappy. cramming more pixels out of 1/2.5 inch sensor. IMO for P&S fuji is far better. The better thing for panny and canon is OIS.

lol do you have a fuji? and btw, here are the pixel density for the S5, FZ18 and S8000fd (since thats the one you recommended) in that order :

Pixel density 32 MP/cm² 32 MP/cm² 33 MP/cm²

The lesser, the better and clearly the foojii has the most :P

Alrite guys

The Guys at Shetala are selling the S5IS @ 14250+taxes

Site

Anybody care to get it...get it

Also prices here are just plain & not bundled ones as in JJmehta...So i warned you

Fuji's are good at low light capability just search in dpreview's forum. My point is if fuji s8000fd can deliver same performance compared to S5 then why spend more money on S5.

Yes i have a fuji.

Fuji s6500fd

Well comparing the two cameras in dpreview - Digital Cameras Side-by-Side, 2 cameras: Digital Photography Review

The bigger pluses of the two are as follow -

Canon S5 +
- Lower pixel density (but only slightly)
- More AF points (Canons generally have been very strong with their AF system)
- Flip out screen (Provides for more variety in composition)
- Slowest shutter speed is 15 secs on the Canon compared to only 4 secs on the Fujifilm (So you cannot take those time lapse photos of traffic at night)
- Filters can be used (The Fuji cannot take ANY filters like a polarizing filter, UV filter etc )
- Lens based IS (OK I don't know if this is true or not but since the Fuji has sensor based IS, you shouldn't be able to see the IS working. So if you zoom out the picture shown on the LCD will be jerky while on the Canon's LCD the picture will be more or less steady. Again I must say that I am not 100% sure coz this is true in DSLRs)

Fuji S8000fd +
- It has a much better flash (There are some nifty flash modes as well.)
- It starts at 27mm (Blows the Canon out of the water on this one. 27mm is far better than the Canon's 36mm)
- While the screen is not a tilting one, it is nevertheless a great screen with a high refresh rate
- Slightly less noisier than the Canon.

So making a conclusion from the above plus and minus points, one should choose the Canon if he wants to learn more about photography and wants to experiment much more.

The Fuji however is more oriented towards P&S enthusiasts. It lacks RAW (available in the Canon with a firmware hack), it cannot use filters, and it has only a 4 sec minimum shutter speed.

But it takes great photos out of the box (before PP) and it has a much better flash. Its zoom range is frankly outstanding as well. Plus it has manual modes to help you have greater control over your pics. So all in all a great P&S as well.

Oh yeah forgot to mention - the Fuji is cheaper as well ! :)

So take your pick and enjoy snapping ! :hap2:

1 more important thing going for the S5 is CHDK. The long exposures can be as long as 60sec and you can over-ride the aperture and shutter speeds for shutter as short as 1/100000th of a second and finally the power of scripts for extra looong shutter speed, HDR photography and motion detection (for photographing lightnings)

Fuji s6500fd

Yeah i've read about the low light performance. Specially of one 50fd or something like that.. can't recall. Anyway, BF1983 summed it up nicely :)

the lens on the fuji is worse than that on s5 and much worse than the leica on fz18. it shows high barrel and pincushion distortions at wide and telephoto, besides quite visible chromatic aberrations at areas of even slightly high contrast. s5 also shows some chromatic aberration, fz18 is the sharpest of the lot.

also the lens on fz18 is faster than the one on the fuji, with a wider aperture of 4.2 compared to 4.5 at telephoto end.. which means it can use faster shutter speeds without underexposing the image. it also has faster AF throughout its zoom range.

to sum up, the fuji is slightly better indoors if you dont mind the lens distortions and when there are not much high contrast shots, but fz18 is MUCH better in outdoor photography. btw, its picture quality is said to improve a lot if you turn down the NR to low and increase the contrast a bit

s8000 is definitely good value. but unless constrained by budget, the FZ18 would get my vote.

besides, the panny is said to be easier to use, though i admit that is user dependant :)

Edit: you can get a bit of an idea from this link

^^ Actually you maybe shocked to hear this, but the Canon has worse Purple Fringing/ Cromatic Aberations than the Fuji ! You can check out the user reviews of people on the dpreview's site.

The Panny is definitely a winner in most aspects. And the noise issue isn't that bad as all these cameras will show noise even at the lowest ISO in dark areas.

exactly... and I am not that shocked either :) S5 does have purple fringing and CA.. but the lens distortions are less.

In fact i think S5 is not worth it imho... if the 18x zoom and wide angle is not needed, then panasonic FZ8 would be a lot better bet.

So my preference would be..

limited by budget.. not needing wide angle and zoom - FZ8

not limited by budget - FZ18

so if someone was willing to spend anywhere between $ 250-350 looking for a camera which takes great pictures Out of the box (both indoors and outdoors) and also lends enough potential for an amateur to learn the basics of professional photography (in due course of time..), what wold you guys suggest :

Lumix FZ-18

Canon S5

anything else..?

basically, i need to buy one asap.. was looking for a compact earlier, but changed my mind..

^^ Well if you read the thread carefully, everybody seems to suggest the Panny FZ18. So would suggest you go opt for that camera as well.
