Digicam between 5-10k

Just wanted a quick suggestion for a digicam between 5-10k. 10k is the upper max limit and I would prefer the price to be closer to 5k.

Going to go in for a proper SLR later and just want to purchase a temporary camera right now. There are lot of offers going on at the moment and was thinking for going in for one of them.

Also, are there any brands that are to be avoided at all costs? There are quite a lot of offers on Kodak, Olympus etc. Are these companies okay?

Thanks for looking!

If your looking for the best picture quality then I would suggest the Canon A1100, it costs around 9500-9800 with 2 year warranty. If your looking for a camera with manual controls then go for the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LZ8, it has good picture quality and manual controls like a SLR. It comes at a great price with 3 years warranty.

If your looking for some thing in the grey market then see if you can find a CANON A590, great quality picture with full manual controls. Should be available for around Rs 7200, it is not available at the showrooms as it has been phased out.

Canon, Panasonic, Olympus and Sony are the brands that I would suggest you to look for.

I know that you can't get a good cam for 5k, but I just don't want to spend a lot of money right now.

@nishanth_in: Thanks man, repped! :)

@ashvarybabul: Instead of one snide comment, you could have atleast given me some options.. :|

I got myself a Canon A590is(grey) last week for 6.2k including a 4gb sd card and UniRoss battery charger+2xhybrio rechargeable cells. Got it frm a reknowned dealer who offered some complimentary replacement warranty as well(1 mnth). Total noob at photography, but IQ looks gr8. Also the A1000is was offered for some 7k odd and A2000is for 8.2k. But got the 590IS coz it was widely recommended here at TE a while back.

How could U wonder that I wont be writing any more...
This is the only section where I have knowledge to write down....

Well, since U dont want to spend muck I would say U should go for a used Camera....
There is no harm in buying a used camera, if the seller is honest....
U can find many who wish to sell of their cam to get money for a DSLR or a lens.....[some one like me]

Also, by getting a used one U can get a very good superzoom in about 10K, which cost about 15K if brought new....A 10K new could be brought in 6K as used one......
Thus if u have no problem with a used one...I highly recommend U to go for a used one....[Also since U mentioned that U need on temporary base,used cam will do it]....

Also, since U will be a getting a DSLR later, the superzoom will help U a lot to learn photography, so that U dont mess up with the DSLR when U buy it....

If u r looking for a New one only,
Keep urself away from those cheap Kodak cams which showoff many features but just cost Rs 5K...
They are total waste of money....Ur 5K will go to drain...

Go for a humble 7-8K cam...
Canon, Sony or Panasonic are better option...
[U would be wondering that I didnt mentioned Nikon - Well nikon is better producer in case of DSLRs, for compact canon gains weightage]

Sony's cam - W180, S950 [W180 is better]
Canon cam - A1100, A480
Panasonic - LZ10, FS42
Anyone of the above will be a good buy for U....

Also keep in mind that U just go for a decent 8-9 megapixel camera only....

Point and shoot cameras have very small sensor, thus have a capability of 8-10 MP only...

But with the increase in competition and need to get the product sell, Camera manufacturers are increasing the Pixel count uselessly....

But more Mega Pixel on such a small sensor brings in serious picture quality issues like noise, over-processing and unreal colors....

Thus go for a decent pixel count of 8-10MP, this will reduce the price of camera too...

I own Panny LZ8 and i am pretty much satisfied with its results. Plus panny cameras do have a wide angle lens in comparison to its rivals

and their Leica Lens is also very popular.

this is the best deal i've found so far... on rediff though :)

As per my experience, Rediff is not so reliable. And it is a great hassle to get a replacement or refund, if something goes wrong with your order. Even Ebay is much better if you choose a reliable seller and use PaisaPay. I got mine a Panasonic FS3 from Ebby-cameraworld a few months ago, and am satisfied with it.

Every One must be warned about purchasing from rediff.- this is chor web site, twice they took order from me-took my money and never shipped the stuff- got my money back after tons of emails- phones etc. etc.
I think the best deal going for a really great digicam is
Panasonic DMC LZ10 lumix Digital camera 10.1MP LZ10 New
3 Years Manufacturer Warranty+ FREE 2GB Card Rs. 6777 shipped- fast service - I purchased and got the cam within 3 days.
eBay India: Panasonic DMC LZ10 lumix Digital camera 10.1MP LZ10 New (item 180400801966 end time 02-Sep-2009 18:16:19 IST)

I bought this camera with 2gb card + pouch + 3yrs warranty ....for 5600 with mp3 player free (ebay gift)from ebay about 5months back...so dont consider it as best deal...its too costly

Thanks Sei for starting this thread :eek:hyeah: ... I m also going to buy camera within same range and found ur thread

So Guys ... Panasonic LZ10 is best choice under 7k ?? :huh::huh:
My max budget is around 6-7k only :( ... I m not much in photography ... just want one digicam for occasions :D

Please suggest :S

@Sei : which one u bought dude?

You might also consider Panasonic Lumix FS3, which will be a bit cheaper than LZ10, but is 8.1 MP and no wide-angle lens for that. But it is a good compact entry-level camera. You should get it for around 5.5 to 6K.
