Unrealistic

After having misplaced 2x Camera's on set, I've decided to finally take the plunge and purchase a new one.
I've lost an el-cheapo BenQ & and Sony W-80 (Relatively new considering I JUST started using it 6 months back).
Anyway, the issue at hand isn't what model to opt for, but how to find the right model for me.
My requirement is simple:
I need a digicam that can take CRISP pictures with flash off.
I've tried and tested A LOT of cameras at Croma, none of them seem to give me crisp pictures. I've toyed with the settings but to no avail. I inquired with the local salesmen aswell, to be honest they weren't very helpful.
I figured we might have a bunch of photographers here so I'm hoping they can help me out. I want some ideas from here before I turn to a DOP friend of mine for help.
I don't mind going for a semi-DSLR as long as it doesn't cross the 15K mark.
Any suggestions?
