Hi,
In India, Internet connections are called as broadband when it has speeds of 256kbps and above. If you ask me, 256kbps is NOT broadband. it needs to be increased. you can't anything more than email, browsing on such low speed. It can't do video which is essential part of web.

256kbps broadband is a scam. because its actually a dialup, just little faster.

Now, you may ask why the heck I am boring you with this bullshit? Well, I am not alone who feel broadband infrastructure in our country needs to improved.

TRAI Chairman in July 2009 said:
There are countries which offer speeds of over 20 Mbps, India is still stuck at 256 kbps.

Microsoft:
The current definition of minimum 256 kbps download capacity in the last mile must be changed in two distinct aspects – firstly, the benchmark must be revised to at least 2 Mbps and secondly, it should be made less and less asymmetric as the user-generated content and other usage trends underscore such needs.
IT major has also suggested that TRAI should review the broadband speed benchmark every two years as more and newer applications continue to emerge.
Why its not implemented?
Operators. they are not upgrading their networks. think that what speeds were suffient 5years back would would enough for today. other concerns are increased prices, but that should be a excuse for a hindering broadband growth.
Should 256kbps considered as Broadband? if not then what should be broadband. I think Govt should revise broadband definition to 2mbps atleast.

your thoughts?

There can be no two thoughts about this . The government should fix 2 mbps as the minimum for broadband . But that wont solve any issues , providers can still provide low speed plans and not call them broadband . What the government needs to do is to unbundle the last loop , eliminate NIXI charges , and make MTNL and BSNL rollout better plans , others will automatically follow suit .

Broadband is just a definition..Broadband limit should be minimum 10mbps, operators can still provide lower bandwidth, and only premium plans above 10mbps should be called broad band..
Also this limit should hav a built in increase, like each year it should increase by 2mbps, and the increase amount should be doubled every 2-3yrs..
Only then will we reach the standards set by developed countries..

Another thing that needs to be set is compulsory unlimited plans on atleast the basic broad band limits..and max price should be set for these unlimited plans..

Definitely NO. It has to be 2 Mbps or so.

Here people currently have average access of speed between 256-512kbps (just a guess) but many of us got a taste of 2 Mbps courtesy goofups by MTNL and now when that goofup was corrected and we were back to crawling speeds, we felt what 2 Mbps was.

Currently i am accessing net at average speed of 2 Mbps+ at my home and still feel it is slow sometimes. I know it may sound ridiculous but the fact is more we are given, more we want. :)

For starters they should do away with plans which have DL/UL bundled in the deal. That is just pathetic. I hardly care if they sell 256bkps termed as Broadband (its just terminology), as per requirement users can choose what they want. But this 'unlimited' should be eradicated. Its quite pissing off to look for service providers providing network at the locality, then seeing their plans, then hunting for darn 'unlimited'. Why charge for how much data traverses my port..? Dumb..!

Minimum standards for speed should be elevated to 2Mbps , after all its like 5 years now BSNL introduced broadband. i hate it when youtube videos pause for buffering.

No, 256k for broadband is absolutely nothing. It should be like Finland where the minimum broadband speed is 1mbps.

Its not like these operators can't do it. They just won't because of the TRAI.

I don't agree. Unlimited plans are nice. I hate data caps, as I always end up paying for over-usage charges:ashamed:

^ even i am not happy with bsnl 256 kbps due to poor download speed and it give mess up long time to download 700 mb movie in 7-8 hour :@ and my computer goes high for power bill :|

that why i have switch some wireless broadband name tikona but it has poor service and i am satisfied feel ok and that why i need faster download speed upto 60-90 kb :)

so i wish if the India government would update new thing in the furture :( otherwise i can move another country soon

I also meant the same, to remove the UL/DL limits from the bundle, and keep all unlimited..?

Okay, sorry. When I meant unlimited eradicated, I meant, NOT part of the bundle, since ALL plans would become unlimited. If all plans become unlimited, then DL/UL limits need not be mentioned.

Airtel's definition of broadband is now 512Kbps. :D
Not much, but I'm not complaining.

Well, I am not alone who feel broadband infrastructure in our country needs to improved.

Yes, you're not.

BUT, implementing it isn't easy or straightforward, whichever way you look at it.

Like most other things in our country, it will take its time...

i hate it when youtube videos pause for buffering.

You're not the only one, mate. :(

Should 256kbps considered as Broadband?

HELL NO!

I never consider 256kbps as broadband.
But,unfortunately I'm still using Alliance 256kbps UL BB with packets loss...:cry::cry:

1. Minimum speed should be 2Mbps.

2. Minimum data cap for limited plans should be 3GB.

3. 2 Mbps UL plans should cost 1000/- ( USD 20 )
