i'm experiencing some problem with my os, which i have presented in this forum and the learned friends have advised to reinstall. i have a 500 gb hard disk and my problem is that my disk is not partitioned.if i go for a clean install all the data will be lost .is there any way by which i could partition my disk without losing data.in that case i will copy all the data in the partition and go for the clean install. thanx

use some disk utility softwares available which will allow u to create partitions without the need to go ahead and re-format / clean install on ur computer. Someone here can tell u exactly which software to use....am sure there are softwares which would allow u to do so....

Simple Partition Magic lets you do that. It will create partition from your free space. make sure you have ups or anything similar. If power goes in b/w of the process you will lose everything.

I was screwed once. Lappy .. battery drained so lappy turn off suddenly.

Dear Pcstore

I am also using laptop and it has only One drive Aka c:\

Can I also use partition magic ?!

well infact I tried but the option for split of the drive C:/ is not operable

I thought may be as this is primary drive with O.S so we cant split this partition

what do you say about it ?

Thanks in Advance :)

You may have a point.

But I remember did resize my C: drive before. It will be able to do as long as you have free space in C drive.

Well .. I may be wrong, pls check with software's home page for details. There are handful of other software which I also didnt try before.

I really dont have time to try now, good luck ! :)

@devagral and @drkhalsa use acronis disk manager - it will solve ur troubles.

remember to defragment the hdd first before resizing it.

You can use either partition magic or disk director to create a partition just create a logical partition after c: and enter the size

Thanks for your advise

will try this !

But one question do I have to resize C:\ First and then creat new Logical Drive right?!

As I tried to do as you said but the maximium size that it alows for new drive is 7.8 mb whil wI have got 10 gb free on hard drive

So should I resize c:\ first?

sorry for the trouble

Thanks anyway

You can also use g-parted, an open source disk partitioner. (It can be downloaded here 49MB) It is a live cd and can be booted to, just download and burn the iso.

You can resize and create a partition with it pretty easily.

it does the resizing automatically afaik ... I can't tell you exact options right now cause i havn't any of them installed right now , maybe someone else can ... but you just have to select > create partition then select the disk where you want to create it and the partition from where the free space is to be taken in disk director

Do you mean you 500GB hard disk got only 10GB left ? Anyway you wont get the full space free while resize. I cant comment how much you will get but never whole free space.

if you have option try to backup your imp data.
