Well, this is something 'novel'. I get however, where this is coming from. The government is is bandage mode... so far, too late. It is upon us as professionals to help each other as much as possible. Please generously donate to the cause.

Both are legit, in fact folding@home has been around since like forever. As for what research they are doing, you can click the link above and read.
Some of the biggest forums used to have their own teams, IIRC even TE had one.
