DivX 7 vs. DivX Pro 7 | DivX.com

Please refer to the link above. It clearly states that divx 7 can play mkv and the paid version ie. divx pro can create mkvs. What kind of impact will this have on standalone players and consoles in the future.

Also, what exactly does mkv support mean? Will the other objects within the container like subs be supported?

MKV
The best container for your HD videos

With its unique ability to store multiple formats and media features (subtitles, audio tracks, etc.) in a single container, MKV has quickly gained in popularity — becoming the preferred file extension for high definition (HD) video. Millions of online videos use the .mkv file extension, with more coming every day.

With DivX® Pro 7 software, we optimized the file container so you can create new DivX Plus™ HD videos with the .mkv extension and playback existing .mkv files from the Internet. DivX Plus HD files contain booming AAC audio tracks and stunning H.264 video — delivering the best cinema-quality HD resolutions on the computer today. And as more .mkv files become available, you’ll be able to enjoy the same HD experience on all your devices.

divx like xvid, h264, wmv is a encoding format for encoding video. so you encode video using divx and audio using mp3 and then put them in a container like avi to make it divx movie.

the avi container is very old and doesnt support things like srt sub titles etc...
on the other hand, mkv is the most versatile container and supports almost all the video, audio and subtitle formats available currently. similarly mp4 is a container for H264 video and aac audio which is called the ipod format.

By the time the DivX player opens the MKV file, you would already be watching the movie on KMPlayer.
It is that slow...
