Android Do multiple accounts on phone affect battery life?

I had a single mail account configured on the gmail app and have now added 3 more to it. I have since noticed that the battery is getting drained a lot faster. I thought number of accounts should not affect sync frequency or duration if from the same app. Does each account sync separately?

Or is it me hallucinating?

Yes, Even I have experienced more battery consumption with multiple accounts.
I keep one account with each phone.
I carry two phones

Well I have never thought about this and I am not sure about it.

if one account takes 60 seconds to sync or download updates then theoretically, 3 accounts would consume more resources.

It should not unless you get lots of emails, emails are 'pushed' so unless there is a new one, there wont be any "updates" going on to download and use resources.

^^ as long as it's not enterprise level email service or paid email service (BB), emails are fetched.

Yup. Every account syncs separately. I have three accounts on my phone. Best way to save battery life is manual sync and use greenify app to hibernate these apps. I save 2-3% battery over 8 hr's using this app.
