Total noob in this dept....
Confuse for what we have to pay nokia 2.8k a year for using gps.....wasnt that free??

if you mean Nokia Maps (the voice nav thing),afaik its licensed 90days,then pay for it.

GPS as such is free. What you might have to pay for is the 3rd part application that use gps for purposes like navigation etc.

ok one more noob here,

so v dont hav 2 pay for GPS but v hav 2 pay for some 3rd party nagivation software ... in total which makes the GPS works (I mean, 4 e.g., I see myself in the map travelling on some road or something)?

How are the prices for such software? and y does 'magnet' says 2.8k a year? is it some subscription?

And is GPS to remain free or will it become some subscription thing too laterz?

hav ne1 used it? how well does it works?

Nokia has some voice based "Drive to destinations" feature on its software and they have to be subscribed periodically...

afaik the gps part is free but the maps&services are not

if you are comfortable with only a longitude/latitude, its free :p

but thats the thing rite... internet wont b there everywhere. But GPS will be there everywhere (I guess :-S ) and thus some offline maps shud better be there in the phone

There are 24 satellites in the orbit that interact with the GPS chip you have onboard you device. At a time, depending on your and the satellites position, you need three satellites for a lock to give you your co-ordinates.

In this respect, the GPS is free.

Lets come to Nokia now:

1. Nokia provides the maps for free.

2. The voice navigation i.e. the turn by turn voice instructions to a particular destination of your choice is charged for after the initial period of the first three months during which its free (if advertised)

But Nokia's maps are only for a handful of cities. So that brings us to another set:

Third Party Softwares

These softwares use the same GPS chip on your device.

They charge for the

1. Maps

2. Voice Navigation

But the above is generally bundled together, reasons for which are obvious.

I hope this clears the doubts.

ya nokia maps are free but if you want to use their voice navigation thingy, you have to pay for them.

more summarisation.....

navigation is charged..(lifetime free if u are on the 6210 navigator models which were out with that special offer) else or all now its charged after 3 mnths....

tracking is free :)

Voice guide is not free..

that is if you dont hav subscription, you can see the roads, your position and everything you see on a payed subscription, but you wont HEAR anything related tot he maps application.

You can try nokia maps or there are many free maps applications too.try them..Some even provide free voice navigation:)

They are essentialy free yar..jus the "turn left" "turn right" are payed services..

there are free ones wit voice navigation too..

Another thing to keep in mind is that GPS signal dies wen u r under Heavy tree cover or wen passing thru a Tunnel/Bridge ..and in most of India we are always under tree cover
