I am an American citizen born to Indian parents. My parents left India when I was 4 (in 1987). I have grown up in America and I find myself more in sync with American way of thinking which leads to sometimes a few go clashes with my parents!! Anyways, last 2-3 years I have read, heard a lot of optimism about India (mostly from Indian students here). So I decided to come to India and even my parents thought that it would be a different country to what it was in 1987 when they left! I did a 10-weeks tour of India, from June-August this year! Mannnn-I really felt it to be a hardcore THIRD WORLD COUNTRY! I went to Mumbai-found it nothing more than a huge garbage dump, the whole city stinks and even when the plane is landing, one can notice so many slums. Well, if that's the financial capital of country, wow, I was wondering what the other places would be like! Almost all the cities were the same (ofcourse didn't stink as much as Mumbai). New Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata-bad roads, ill-maintained civic infrastructure, traffic congestion-crap everywhere! I mean no wonder Indians are lining up to run towards greener pastures! I think India has no chance to be ever counted amongst the top league nations of the world! What is first world-I think India and Indians have no idea about it. Hahaha-Mumbai-the economic powerhouse-a third class city indeed of a third class country. I am so happy my parents migrated when I was young-now I know how lucky I am to be an American citizen!

I have only gone to singapore and south korea. Frankly they are not much different than india. So i dont know what this USA or UK is like. I agree that our top cities are not doing so well but look at this guys comment, WTF. :@ :@
What is this third world country?? Even we eat pizzas, ride in ferraris, watch movies on plasma, test nuclear bombs.

There is a lot of inequality but its been only 60 years since we are independent, we have progressed very nicely i believe. While US is independent since around 250 years. So whats the big deal? :chair: :blabla:

They are clean...you can like make out the footpath from the road and even feel like walking on it :P

The guys pissed off about our infrastructure....but just the fact foreigners come into our country with such high expectations only just 60 years since our independence and a case of world's most severe over population speaks a lot on how kickass we are...its what that dweeb needs to know.

I agree he shouldnt be calling India crappy in that manner, but there's an element of truth in what he said.

He meant about basic living conditions which are more or less true in the statments he made
Lets start to think about the common man rather than those people who earn high in MNCs/business/real estate

I have met so many people who are from all different parts of the world . in Gokarna , my village , you find a LOT of foriegn people . they love india , and i know many people who make it a point to visit every year for 2 + months .

The matter of the fact is that , the guy writing this is a stupid person . a twat as ^ put it .

A lot of foreigners, including americans, pay top dollar to visit my state. And almost everyone comes back. And i would just LOVE to let this twat know, that 'americans' are the most unwelcome here because of their boorishness and endless comparison with USA. Like my friend, a tour operator, says, why do they come here at all if they miss life back home so much? I'd say thank god his parents emigrated!

dosen't the garbage in usa stink? or have they modified garbage fumes to give out only benzene or olefin odours?

i remember seeing on Flickr some dumb a$$ norwegian tourists - they had taken a lot of photos of mostly slums and dirty beaches and came to the conclusion that bombay is the dirtiest place they had seen.

one of them even said that the first class compartment of our mumbai locals was so dirty he wouldn't put his luggage in it.

All these guys are jerks - if they come in search of garbage, they'll find garbage! u cant expect garbage to smell of scent, can u?

the sooner we rid our country of such jerks the better!

their stereotypical dumbass attitude towards India really pisses me off.

+3 for the twat comment

Don't mind that twat

what else do you expect from comments on rediff anyway

oh, and BTW any big city is bound to be dirty

Just look at the subway tubes in LA or NY....plastered with graffiti all over the place...having said that, a singapore (definitely) or a NYC (quite a bit) are cleaner than say a Mumbai

but then every place has its own good & bad....

e.g. Even a highway dhaba in India would have far better service levels than a snooty restaurant in LA

i see blr_p lurking around in the thread . so he will have something to say about this . soon after you can expect yamraj to post something and enjoy a debate between the two .

ill probably get some popcorn and softdrinks to keep me occupied when this starts ..

dont mind me ...joking :P

He's got a point on the smell thing. If you come here for a short trip, it hits you immediately. Now however if you live here for much longer, you don't notice it as much or maybe you adapt to it, i think this is the key.

The best time to be outdoors is after a good shower...it really does smell like the whole place just rebooted itself. That's how it smells in western cities nearly all the time. They enforce pollution very strictly there, they don't burn leaves when they feel like it. They don't have open sewers or burst lines all the time.

But then you compare a tropical country to a temperate like those in europe or the US that have a far better sewage & garbage disposal system with a fraction of the ppl. Not like we can't do it, but its infrastructure again.

The rest of his comments are standard fare for any westener that comes over. I had a friend over from Somerset, 100% English, now him being a country person, is quite used to the smell of cow-dung or cowpat/pie as they call it. He'd snigger whenever he watched some white guy, walking, face scrunched up, like they were smelling farts or something. If you live on a farm there, i can confidently say it smells even worse than over here :D

We did the festival at Glastonbury a few times and when you get a quarter of a million ppl partying in a field, for a week, things happen :ohyeah: and the country folk are always poking fun at the city folk and their tolerance for "smell".

The only time it stinks in western cities is if you're standing in public transport on the way home, very packed, its hot, everyones deodorant's worn off, your face stuck in some other taller one's armpit.

dude,,

we indians are jus coming off of a coupla hundred years of crappy RAJ... all the british ever managed to do was suck us dry...

hope i get to meet that twat ( +5 :P ) someday and give him a nice hard kick in his gonads..

our country has come up damn well is wat i would say given the time we've had..

there jus is no way one can go about comparing cities like singapoer nd NYC to bombay/delhi man.... the whole scale is so out of proportion.. the weather is different.. the terrain is different.. the social structure is different.. the attitudes are different.. the people are different.. the economic structures are different.. if anyone was dumb enough to ignore all this and go on to pass such comments, i can only thank my stars that his parents kicked him out of the country as soon as they did...

Man we simply cant say that we have been liberated just 60 years ago and pass on the buck, actually to me it seems all about the politicians and the public in general. We are a country of corrupt people(even history is full of them), if only we could remove corruption then maybe we would be really counted as a developed nation, but removing corruption is no mean feat...
