Hi,
Brought 500GB hdd from Ebay. when I checked it on Seagate website, it shows only 3year warranty:(

However In the ebay listing it says 5 year warranty.

for this, I haven't opened the drive yet. Its still sealed. guys please advise what can be done now?

* Should I send the drive back to seller?
or
* Is there any way to get the warranty increased via Seagate?

Yes contact the seller first and let him sort things out. Meanwhile i wanted to ask everyone whether an OEM drive has 3 years and retail ones with 5 years, that is there are separate OEM and Retail drives

i guess the new set of HDD carries just 3 years warranty... The HDD's bought during 1st quarter of 2009 had 5 years.

You can probably try talking to the seller... and get to know what he has got to say.... or just send the HDD back...

Seagate has 3 yrs warranty in US but 5 yrs warranty in India , so there are chances that your drive is not a official import .In that case you won't be able to claim warranty on the drive as well.

A unofficial import will also show warranty on seagate India site but when you take it for RMA to Accel frontline they will deny warranty saying the purchase is not from India , hence not shown in their records.A lot of members on TE have been facing this issue with Seagate. I myself know of 2 TE friends who have their drives with the dealer since months.

This issue of illegal imports of Seagate drives seems to be a serious one. :(.Members buying seagate drives should take care that the packaging has the official import / distri sticker on it.

@Gaurish . Incase the packaging doesn't have a official import sticker with a price in INR,I would suggest you don't accept the drive on ebay until you sort it out with the seller.

The distributor I know here told me that from 2010 onwards, seagate was only offering 3 years warranty on its drives and that WD was planning to follow suit. Can anyone confirm this?

^The drive seems to be official import. See the warranty page it says fortune marketing pvt.

Gaurish, your drive could be a rmaed one :P or maybe its the new batch with just 3 years warranty. Anyway call up the seller and see what he has to say about this.

I did contacted the seller, who in turn forwarded my query to chennai office of FORTUNE. they haven't replied yet.

There is a Sticker with Importer name as, FORTUNE MARKETING PVT. LTD(.fortune-it.com). along with MRP and date of import. the date of import is December 2009

Its not RMAed drive, I am pretty sure. but less warranty
that's so wrong.the Ebay listing clearly mentions the warranty period as 5years(that's the reason I brought it). I feel like cheated:no:

Should I raise a dispute with Ebay of giving wrong listing information?

I somehow feel that this is a rmaed drive, Not all rmaed drives come with the green sticker or if they don't have a repaired drive of the same capacity they will give you a new drive but the warranty will be carried over from the original drive.

My Drive has 5 years warranty and it says says fortune marketing pvt.

Call up seagate india directly and see if you can sort this out

I bought a 500GB hard disk in April from Prime. Even it has 3 yrs warranty only.

Contacted Seagate, they said :

Thank you for contacting Seagate's Email Support Team.

Your drive is in warranty until 2012, this would be a 3 year warranty.

Our warranty periods are 1 year, 2 years, 3 years or 5 years from the documented date of purchase, depending on the type of product and where it was purchased.

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

3rd email:
Thank you for contacting Seagate.

Please be informed that your serial number has a warranty until 2012, 3 years. Our drives have 3-5 years warranty, but it depends on the reseller and the price the drive was bought at thus not all drive contains the same warranty.

If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

감사합니다

Prime is also not able to do anything.

I dont remember whether it had a label or not....

4 months back when i went to buy a external hard disk for my friend @ Bangalore there were 2 types of seagate hard disks were one had 3 yrs of warranty and the other one had 5 yrs of warranty...

there was a price difference of 500 bucks with both the hard disks...

The Seller has replied

Sir,

It seems that Seagate has reduced its warranty to 3 Years from Jan 1, 2010

So wherever you buy you shall get only 3 Years Warranty..

We are carrying some old stocks ..

Please send me the hard drive back, Will try and replace it with 5 Years Warranty product.

^^ So seagate is reducing their warranty to 3 years !!!. I guess they got tired of endlessly replacing the 7200.11 series drives :P

Now there is no more reason to buy Seagate. The only good thing abt Seagate was their warranty. Now I can happily recommend friends to buy WD.

^ Warranty was never so great with Seagate , one had to waste 2 days at the service centre to submit the HDD and take it back from RMA. :@.

WD provides door to door replacement, and one of the best service Ive ever experienced .Let me tell you a recent incident .My 640GB AAKS developed bad sectors so before filling the RMA request form ,i sent a mail to WD India asking them about the high failure rates of the Blue AAKS drives. The next day I got a call from some manager at WD ,Delhi who promised me a 1TB Green drive as replacement in lieu of the 640GB AAKS if I face issues with the Blue ones.

I explained to him that a GREEN drive will be slowed than AAKS series so he obliged to send a 1TB BLACK . To top it all , the courier guy came the very next day to collect the defective drive and a replacement 1TB Black was shipped to me on the same day itself. ie- Advance replacement.:ohyeah:

Now that's called Awesome Customer service. After this incident ,Ive become a complete WD fan and changed all my drives to WD .Total 3 X 1TB drives.1 Black and 2 Green.:D

@Gaurish , sorry for the OT. hope you don't mind .All I want to say here is that there is no reason as such to get Seagate drives these days especially with the issues with reduced warranty and Accel Frontline denying so many drives from RMA.

^yea my friend goes to Accel every week to collect his rma'ed 250gb seagate, only to find the same faulty drive returned to him:D

And coming to the point today i bought Seagate 7200.12 500GB ST3500418AS and it has warranty till dec 30, 2014 yaaay :D:D

If Seagate cost less than WD ?
Price difference if any is marginal, but the difference in reliability and ultimately your peace of mind more than makes up for the price difference if any. Speaking from personal experience

Yes from Jan 1st 2010 Seagate has officially changed the warranty period to 3 Yrs on the Internal HDD's

Then WD will prosper... Seagate will loose its only saving grace... :@

previously it provides 5 year warranty but now only it 3 year warranty.
If there mentioned for 5 year then i can't suggest anymore for it.
but i sure that now it is for 3 year warranty only.
