Domain reigistration - dumb newbie question

Thanks!

Could you recommend a good domain registrar ? I heard register.com and networksolutions.com are the best.

However they fill their terms of service with so much jargon that it amounts to overhead transmission for me.

How /where do you link the domian name mydomianname.com to your free site? IS this done though something called DNS? I'm very confused.

Can't you just enter the URL of your free site whereever it is and have the domain point to it?

godaddy.com has good prices and is well known too.
Every registrar has a really long TOS.
Well when you register the domain name you get a user panel wherein you can specify the DNS server you will be using, ie the server address of the host where your site is hosted. Now any queries for that new domain will be transferred over to the host server.
At your host you have another usercp where you can specify that you want to use this domain name for your site. so whenever the request for that name is transferred to your host servers it knows which site to load.
I hope i did not confuse you.

Thanks so much Renegade and Sunnydiv

Some companies offer hosting + domain registration packages. Wouldn't that
simply the job?

Or is it better to have them seperate?

Well that would be good if the hosting is reliable and depends on the kind of service you are looking for. If you are serious bout your website and will have decent amount of hits then it is imperative that you conduct some research on the host and compare it with other hosts. Use google for that.
I have no idea as to how iit would simplify te job for you. You can ask that from the respective support column/email for that particular host.

Buy a domain for as little as 400 bucks. They have domain forwarding which you want as well as domain masking. Most of the registars dont have masking.

Masking hides your real address.

After buying a domain get an account at

Free Hosting, I mean it, not a single ad, its great.

Hope this helps.

And along with setting up DNS entries, if you got CPanel at your hosting service you should set up the Parked Address setting to your registered domain name ..
