Do's

• keep your laptop in a cool, dry area
• set your laptop on a solid, steady surface for proper air circulation
• position your power cord out of the way so it is not easily
tripped over
• place your laptop in a secure location when it is not in use
• put your laptop in a locked cabinet when leaving it at
school/college
• while putting the laptop inside the bag make sure the the laptops is switched off else it may get damaged due to heat recirculation
• clean the laptop using a plain cloth using drops of water in switched off condition
Don’t

• leave your laptop in direct sunlight or in dusty area
• place your laptop near other equipment that emits heat/magnetic effect
• eat or drink near the laptop
• Don't keep your laptop with cables plugged in when you are away, some body may trip the cable and laptop may get damaged..
• rest your laptop on uneven, unsteady or yielding surfaces
• leave your laptop in an unlocked car
• Don't keep any hard substance on the keyboard or surface, sudden closure of the screen may damage
• leave your laptop unattended while anything is plugged in to it...

lol. my latop has gone thru everything listed and it still works :P both mine and my office laptop :P

Do

-Always use a Laptop cooler when gaming on it.

PS: 70% of laptops die cause of dead motherboards. 90% of motherboards die because of overheating!.

Do -

Remove your Laptop Battery if it's not in use for more than 10 days...

Don't -

Charge & Discharge Laptop battery Simultaneously which reduces it's lifecycle.

You mean not to use them plugged in ? Or not to use them when its plugged in and when battery is charging and still not 100%

i didn't mean either of those..
what i mean is once your laptop is charged fully then don't disconnect it from a power outlet unless required..

:D Was wondering how you will charge and discharge the battery at the same time(simultaneously)

Thats why got confused. Poor me :P

Don't: Move your laptop around, while running or with disk inserted in the disk drive.

Most tips are probably valid for old gen laptops. The latest bunch of laptops (at least from the past couple of years) use sophisticated systems and chassis for countering the ill effects of most of the problems listed above.

For example, a lot of HDDs have free fall sensors that automatically park the head in a few milliseconds to counter the effects of moving the laptop around.

There are tons of third party software that will lock the battery charging process at a fixed value (say 70%) to prevent the 0-100-0 battery refresh problem.

I eat and drink near my laptop all the time since it has a flow sink beneath the keyboard that gets the stuff out. A cold air blower should take care of food particles stuck between the keys. Use a diluted mix of isopropyl alcohol and water to clean the keyboard, screen and other areas. Of course, prevention is better than cure but there's no reason to stay away from the laptop while enjoying your food/drink.

Again, third party software's available to prevent overheating of the CPU, GPU and other vital components so you can game as much as you want. For example, tpfancontrol is an AIO monitoring solution for all Thinkpads.

Of course, cleaning the laptop once in a while will ensure many happy years of usage. Be sure to use a cool air blower to get the dust out from around the fan exhaust area. Clean the CPU and reapply thermal paste every year (every 6 months if you live in a hot area).

Using a msi cr400x since a month and sometimes the charging goes upto 95 or 98% and doesnt charge further . I dont have any softwares installed for this purpose. If i place mouse pointer at the power icon in the tray i get - 98% POWER, PLUGGED IN, NOT CHARGING. Have been wondering whether there is any issue with the battery. Is this normal for the laptop to behave in this manner ?. Please help..

Do:

Remove the batteries if you are keeping your laptop in bag while travelling. (Once, my battery got completely discharged during a 14 hour journey. Don't know how.)

Use some kind of soft cloth between the keys and display if you are carrying it in a back pack.

Dont's:

Carrying the laptop in an overloaded backpack. (Did this within 1 week of buying my new lappy, got the display scratched since it got pressed against the keys. Fortunately, got the complete display replaced for another issue while under warranty!)

do you really have to reapply thermal paste etc. Does it have an expiry. And how can you be sure that it needs so. Can you suggest when you do it and why ?

the work of the thermal paste is to pass (conduct) the heat from proccy. to the heatsink in an efficient way..

unlike medicines it does not have any expiry date..

thermal paste needs to be changed coz it gets dry after a certain period of usage..

one should remove the compound & reapply it once a year..so,as to avoid processor overheating..

dude! i have the same issue in windows 7 but not in xp. the trick is to let the laptop battery life reach 90--93% in windows 7 and then plug in the adapter - that will make it reach 100% the laptop won't charge its battery unless they have been discharged by 7-8%(93% battery life remaining).
its apparently some protective measure for the laptop as a guy at the service center told me.
btw how much battery life are you getting out of your laptop?

1. Don't carry your open laptop in one hand and Beer bottle in another hand. Because IF you drop it, most probably Laptop screen will hit the ground.

2. Don't put your laptop in a chair, someone might sit on it.

These 2 points from first hand experience :P, 1st case - my netbook. 2nd case - my roommates laptop, person sitting on it was me :P. I didn't even realize (drunk) untill he noticed and shouted on me. Luckily no damage(except top metal surface wasn't in exact shape).
