One of my friend needs a performace beast in budget of 55k(can extend 2-3k)
He will be using windows 7, ubuntu and mac(for iphone development)
He will be running emulators of android sdk, bada and ios. He will also be running visual cpp and other coding related softwares.
He needs a performance machine and should be durable enough to last atleast couple of years without any hiccups. he also stressed that it should have good cooling system too!

I recommended his xps 15 which comes with i7 and ruled out hp because of recent experience of sub par cooling system. But I have few doubts:-
1. Will he be able to switch manually between onboard and dedicated GPU or it will be automatic only?
2. I heard there is no driver support for optimus in ubuntu. So, he will be able to use only onboard GPU?
3. Does this xps has enough juice to handle mobile phone development emulators and other heavy coding softwares?

1.It not possible to manually switch between IGP and GPU but some applications and games may be specified to run using IGP/GPU in NVDIA control panel.

2.There is no driver support for optimus but you can use onboard GPU without any issues.

3.XPS 15 with i7 processor can handle all the tasks mentioned above.

ok, thanks for your reply.

There is a lot of fuss about fhd screen but it will overshoot his budget. Is it really worth to go for it?

XPS 15 will be best choice for requirement.

Try to customize the base model (47300 ) and upgrade the Proccy to i5 and FHD will cost around 58K and you will get 5% discount on the MRP.

How do you get the 5% off ?

If he can get it via a dell Employee(For products worth more than 50K, they give 12% discount :ohyeah:) it'll be a great deal!

i have an XPS 15 with i5 and WLED HD screen..

I feel its enough, but slightly higher res, like 1600x900 would be great..

Due to budget constraint,i stuck with default screen...

I have tried android emulator, and i must tell you,it kinda takes about 3min to load.. So, better to go for i7..

Customer care rep told me that they give 5% student discount for people studying in NIT and IIT so I will use one of my friend's college ID to get it:p

But he also told me that online price doesn't include vat which is 4%
