Around 2 months back, my friend purchased a Macbook pro 13 inch for 61k.
Today his laptop fell from chair. Since then, whenever he is trying to boot it gets stuck on apple logo. There are no physical marks of physical damage.
Should he take directly it to apple service center or after purchasing an extended warranty?
I am not sure if accidental damage is covered in extended warranty.

Best is to play dumb. If you can, take it in a nice bag with lots of padding to show how protective you are of your MBP. ;)

^^ tell him to take it back, just dont tell them what happened.act stupid.

AFAIK most of the newer Apple lappies and mobile products have free fall sensing. While one of its goals in a laptop is to switch of the HDD during a free fall, I think one of the other goals is to let the service guy's know that the lappy was dropped. I am not sure if acting dumb and not telling would mean anything.

Besides isn't it cheating acting dumb when we know first hand its dropped by us.

I mean if a dealer send us a used product or damaged piece calming it as new i am sure there would be hue and cry and rants against the dealer or manufacturer in forum, probably he would be blacklisted.Even in our market section i understand how sensitive we are to misrepresentations and deceit.
And in this very forum to suggest someone to hide the fact isn't very encouraging.

That's because of 2 things, 1st its quite expensive (IMO Apple always overprices their stuff), 2nd, the MBP should have detected the fall in the first place and paused the HDD. It did not. Also we have no evidence to show that the fall was the cause of the damage, it could have been already damaged in the first place.

Oh, and btw, when you happen to have a similar kind of incident, you can tell the truth to the service centre in complete detail.

they wont accept it if he says he has dropped it,better to play safe.afaik if he just gives them and tell's them to verify the problem they usually accept it.if you tell them it was in part cause due to water or a fall then they do not accept it.

@ op - has your friend used some troubleshooting techniques? tell him to visit macrumours

For 1 thing I surely know if you make a big deal along with a hue & cry, apple will definitely get the laptop fixed or replaced. Happened with a guy in my bldg & he got his screen rreplaced for free :D

Update: He booted with OSX disc and was able to install in the partition which he had for ubuntu but its running pathetically slow. He will backup his important data and then will take it to the service center.

It looks my post has offended you and i am really sorry.I just felt it was the right thing to do.However this is not my call to take. This is your prerogative and how you deal it.Sorry again.

Trust me in far worse cases i have involving my car accident. But then again as i said ,its not right for me to moral someone else. Just a suggestion and please ignore me friend.

You took it personally! I'm not saying anything, its just that when you go for a warranty claim, they will check the system. So if they find physical damage inside, the OP will not get warranty.

And as far as the car/bike accidents are concerned, we all have to come clean ;)

Act dumb and behave like computer n00b @ the service center -- they guys at apple would believe you !

@ Op serves you right for buying an overpriced lousy underperforming piece of junk from Apple. Now live with it! Too bad if it was a dell you would have got the problem fixed in 24 hours. HP and lenovo would do that for their business laptops in 3 and 5 days respectively. There's a lot more to looks in life!

Act dumb and behave like computer n00b @ the service center -- they guys at apple would believe you anyways!

Please take the advice from this Genious who can create better products than apple rather than talking. Yes he has to live with the MBP. but he will live with that longer. rather than having a device that he has to work upon than working with it...

Moreover, Do you get a "RED carpet welcome" when you go to the so called other service centers?

and you are an awesome intelligent guy who can change the world...
