Other Dropped MOTOG2 in water

Dropped motog2 in water for few seconds. Got it cleaned by nearby repair center within few hours. Was able to see water in rear camera lens before cleaning it. Was in different city and did not do repairs.

Now, touch is not working but display is working. Is it possible to repair touch alone?


Asked in a repair shop in Chennai (Where I live) and they are quoting 3000 for replacing touchscreen+display.

Please let me know what my options are.
 
If the digitizer stopped working then you will have to get the entire display assembly replaced. Follow the above advice, take it to a service center

I don't know if this is true or nor but I read this on so many forums asking the victims to put the watered product in a rice bowl...
And then get it to OFFICIAL MOTO service centre to get it repaired ask them what all are not functioning properly and ask them to repair it instead of replacing them..

It's been 15 days since I dropped it and I got it cleaned of water in a repair centre. Before cleaning it I was able to see water in the camera lens.

I will try keeping it in a bag of rice for few days and report back.

Also saw few threads of people buying from aliexpress and replacing the screen which ends up cheaper. What is your thoughts on this?

Why does everyone suggest taking to OFFICIAL service. Is it because other sources are very bad?
 
for local screen you should be charged around 1500 max, for 4 inch local screen replacement they charge 600/- in delhi.

Also if only the touch is not working then most the time it is fault in connection between digitizer and motherboard of cell phone. Did the shop person tried to check the connector?

Because the service center guys know the exact steps to dis-assemble your unit. Plus they won't probably steal your genuine components.:p

I did that. Pretty easy. Comes out to be cheaper too. Only issue is that you have to wait for long time to get the screen (as shipping takes around 30 days)

Did you do this for motog2? If yes or even if the answer is no can you point me to the seller you bought from. Also how is the performance of the replacement?

Any tips for doing this.
 
I did it for a Moto G first gen about three weeks back. The process is very easy, as long as you have the right tools. Got the screen from an ebay seller, as I didnt want to wait for weeks to get it from aliexpress. Replacement works absolutely fine. It was advertised as original Moto replacement. I'm not sure how true that is, but I can't notice any difference between the replacement and my original display before it shattered.

I did that for Moto Atrix HD. It's quite easy and as @logistopath said you just need right tools and youtube to complete the swap.

changing the display+digitizer+front plastic assembly (as a single unit) is very easy. If you are not confident download the video and take the help of local mobile repair guy. He'll probably charge you 200-300 Rs.

But changing only the digitizer only is a specialist job. I tried to do that on a HTC HD2 and it was quite tricky.

Which city are you in? because in cities replacement screens for moto-g should be available easily for quite cheap. Just try talking to a few big mobile repairing shops. They will do everything for you in a few minutes.

Chennai. The phone is in a bowl of rice for the past 3 days. Let me check in few more days!
 
A bowl of rice works as a good desiccant, but not the best one. A 50/100 gm of silica gel could have done a better job. Rice bowl is usually recommended for a quick home made desiccant.
I suppose three days is enough and if the phone has not started working then you should seriously start looking towards repairing the phone. If you are a DIY type and like to fiddle around with electronics then follow that approach. Else spend a little more money and go for a professional repairing shop/service center. That way you can continue with your other works of life without getting bugged down with You tube videos, tools, setting up a workplace etc. Also everybody may not like the thrill of DIY

How more days you'll be feeding rice to your phone? 4-5 days is fair enough.
I'm sure you wont go the diy way so rush it to your nearest moto service center. you may spend 3k or so but in the end you'll be at peace.

Also ask them if any more damages have occurred inside. Such as mic, speaker, sensors, wifi and bt chips etc. as these tend to get damaged immediately due to water and check sim and mmc slots as well.

Else you'll come home replacing the display and touch pad and again panic that you phone isnt working fine for calling and transferring data.

Finally took it from rice bowl and tested. No improvement. Touch doesn't work. Took it to Chennai MOTO service centre where I was told that they will report back on status and estimate by monday and the rough quote for replacing touch is 7500.

Taking it to Richie street now. Let's see.


If someone can recommend a good repair guy in Chennai it will be great.
