So, I'm heading for a holiday next week and am considering buying a DLSR. I've already saved up and am looking to buy the D90 or any other camera if anyone can convince me (as long as its cheaper). I'm still thinking if I should go for a lower end one since the D90 is quite expensive.

The issue is that I first head to HKG and then to BKK. Now I don't know whether I should buy it in HKG or wait till BKK. Any idea?

Check out HKG.. better prices. Have been to both the cities earlier this year.

Where are you staying in HK? Kowloon? If so, there are some good shops in TST, near the Panorama Hotel. Great stuff.. was getting a K20D for 35k INR.

staying in TST only.. any other recommendations apart from D90? or is it advisable to go for something lower?

If you find Made in Japan Nikkor lenses at good prices, even if those are second-hand ones, grab with both hands... those are supposed to be the best pieces of optical engineering. :)

D90 is seriously good camera... but if you're looking for something on lower budget then Canon 500D is worthy option. Unfortunately, Nikon has huge gap currently between D90 and entry level DSLR. D60 and D40x, as D40 and D60 are too low on features compared to D90 and D5000 is, in many senses, a glorified D60/D40 with few gimmicks under it's belt.

So it ideally goes down to either D90 or EOS 500D... apart from these two, do check out Alpha series from Sony and K20D.

ok.. ill keep both in mind. i will buy one lens with either. any suggestions? also, what is the max i should be looking to pay for the bod + recommended lens in either case?

i know the canon comes with the 18-55 and the nikon comes with the 18-105. what ive also heard is that while the 18-105 is a decent lens, the stock 18-55 on the 500d isnt that good. since i will be buying one lens only (either stock or separate) i need a flexible option.

Eh ? Whats so great about the 500D ??? Its got a 15 MP sensor which is useless as the D5000 has better high noise ISO performance and only slightly lesser resolution.

Heres what dpreview concludes on the 500D - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos500d/page29.asp

And heres the conclusion for the 5000D - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond5000/page33.asp

I would say a Canon 40D is a much better buy compared to a 500D.

The 500D has a pathetically slow burst rate (3.4 fps) and a pentamirror viewfinder which is found in only cheap DSLRs and its a plastic body with a rather poor grip. Yet is rather expensive compared to the 40D with its magnesium alloy body, pentaprism viewfinder and 6.5 fps burst rate.

Go for D90 an excellent professional grade hardware... you can also check out the latest X-series models from NIKON there are also great...

If your budget supports then this: Nikon Imaging Asia Pacific

Or any of the following depending on the budget and deal you get that is:

Nikon Imaging Asia Pacific

Nikon Imaging Asia Pacific

Nikon Imaging Asia Pacific

Just to let you know, I have been in photography for about 16 years now and had the good fortune of using almost all the leading Camera brands (SLRs i mean), and I would strongly suggest that you go for the NIKON, you shall never regret it.

Just a piece of advice, in case you feel that the lens is going to be prohibitive for you, go for SIGMA Lenses, the latest from the stable like 70-300 and 24-120 (if I remember correctly the second one), coupled with NIKON body these are excellent combination and provide you more flexibility in terms of shooting at lower cost. :)

ok. hkg seems to be much cheaper. im still deciding between the d90 and 500d. what i also just saw was the nikon is launching the d300s and d3000 on 4th august.

im pretty sure that the d300s will be way over my budget and if the d3000 is a lower segment than d5000, im not interested in it.

If you ask for comparison, I would only suggest that you compare the features and look which of the feature set suites you best and hence you get the best VFM. Any other comparison like which shoots better is rather useless, as because at the end it is your personal preference. Still I would go for D90 for sure.

I would also go with the D90 only. I believe 15 MP on an APS-C sensor is overkill and 12 MP is about as high as it should be.

But I tried out the 50D in Croma and I was very impressed with the performance. Very fast with a 18-200mm lens. But I suppose the D90 will also be as fast.
