DuckTales Remastered - Discussion Thread

Capcom is already under a lot of pressure from it's fans concerning the ongoing petitions of bringing Dragon's Dogma and Asura's Wrath on PC. So it's best to understand if they even they even pay heed to the thread in the forum and the petition can be unleashed after that.

Maybe then filing for a petition wont be a good idea. Unnecessary pressurising them for a demand wont be appreciated if they already are hard pressed to achieve the goals they have at hands.

Kinda disappointing reply from Capcom rep:

Unfortunately, we are no localizing the title to Hindi. We are offering English VO and text in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Brazilian Portugues. We obvioulsy can't support all languages for VO and Text. The languages we decided on for text are the main ones that most of the industry defaults to in order to hopefully hit one of the languages that most people understand. For VO, due to filesize and that this is a digital title, we can only offer VO in one language. All of the localization has had a pass through Disney, so it should read authentically if you're used to reading DuckTales in one of the above languages. To answer your questions:

a.) Hypothetically, if you were to consider the option of language localization in India, what sort of challenges would you forsee?

I honstely don't know what specific challenges Hindi could offer. I have never worked on a project that was localized to Hindi.

b.) Could you briefly explain how this process works?

Pretty simple (in theory) actually. The text in the game is outputted into a spreadsheet with slots for all of the languages. The spreadsheet is sent to whoever is doing the translating and they input the translations. The spreadsheet goes back to the developer, who then re-integrates the text file into the game. The UI team should already have laid out what text goes where so in the most ideal world the additional languages should display perfectly. Of course that's not what happens. We always need to adjust the display because of text out of boxes, not displaying correctly, or needs retranslation.

c.) What kind of help is required for aiding you in this process?

There are usually 3 groups involved in translation. Sometimes these groups consist of the same people. Translators (does the actual translation), localization QA (checks translation, make sure it displays correctly), and compliance localization QA (focuses on 1st party requirements).

I have asked him for contact details of people @ Disney who might help in this / future projects. Maybe we can convince people for Hindi support as it is understood not only in India but most of the neighbouring countries. And when you look at the expat population of these nations, they obv have a huge number to consider.
Lets see what happens.

Yep. I knew it would be an obvious reply, as Hindi is a language which most game developers have never imagined on localizing, as they usually go for the immediate default; English. However, he does make a good point on the title being digital download and the additional voice files would increase the titles file size. As XBLA titles mostly have a certain size limitation, it wouldn't be feasible for them to have multiple audio in this game.

I am hoping the noise making/raising the issue of including a language other than what they think is default, viz English/EU Languages/Jap/Chinese will atleast do something.

I dont know if the Indian gaming rep / gaming community from India has ever asked them to include any of our languages.

Woo-hoo! You guys demanded it, so we’re unbelievably happy to announce that your most requested platform will indeed be receiving DuckTales: Remastered! Yep, Capcom’s heartwarming collaboration with Disney and WayForward will definitely be pogoing onto hard drives everywhere via Steam, Origin, Impulse, GamersGate, Green Man Gaming and numerous other places PC gamers download their wares.
The game is similarly priced at $14.99 and should launch within or around same window as the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U versions. We should have more DuckTales splendor to show ya leading up to E3, including the reveal of an all-new remastered level, very soon (And I mean VERY SOON!) Man, with Rey’s recent unveiling of DuckTales' free XBL avatar shirts, it looks like I’m purchasing at least two versions of the game. Gotta have mah Steam version!

Completed the title a few days back. It was a good TP, nothing great honestly.

First off, voice acting is very good! I was a bit skeptical about this but they have done this part exceedingly well. The voices of McDuck, Huey, Dewey, and Louie Duck were well portrayed. We will miss the Hindi voice dubs though. Visuals look vibrant and the characters have been well designed except for the fact that when the respective character speaks, there’s no animation in their beaks - the character as a whole just animates. The gameplay is a bit lousy - some enemies cannot be beaten by conventional means and an improper jump over them might cost us health and sometimes a life!

I started out with the Normal difficulty but couldn’t get past the second level - Transylvania. Cleared the Amazon with half a dozen tries! It was that hard and sometimes I was cursing the game itself for no fault of mine. Normal difficulty grants 3 health bars (hearts) and the enemy takes out a whole heart if they come in contact with McDuck and he starts out with 3 lives. 1-ups can be collected from Mrs. Beakley who will be hidden somewhere in a level. The map reveals the path and important collectibles as McDuck explores the level. On the contrary, the Easy difficulty went fine. McDuck has unlimited lives and the enemies drain just half of a heart. The map is revealed in its entirety at the start along with the location of the collectibles. I wish the Normal difficulty was a bit easy on the beginners.

Boss battles are good but analyzing the pattern of each boss initially might take some time claiming health/lives.

The game definitely brought back some good memories of the ‘90s era when we used to watch the DD channel. :’)
