Hey guys,

Looking for DVD Player to buy on this diwali :P which has following feature:

HDMI (well wont be using that any sooner as am CRT)
USB 2.0 is a must
DiVX Compatible is a must
DTS / Dolby Compatible is a must
DVD Upscailing .... whats that exactly?
DTS Decoder .... Not much clear with the Idea when it comes to DTS Decoder in a DVD Player...xplanations are welcome
Should be compatible with 4.1 / 5.1 Speaker Systems
DiVX with AC3 5.1 Audio should be compatible w/o any issues (no skipping or so)
...other features like cables, mp3, mpeg4, vcd, svcd, normal DVDs (DVD9 ie. 8gb DVDs compatible?)

.... if ths player isnt having any Upscailing then will it support .AVI having 720 and above reso??? and if yes then will they work @ 720p and above reso or they'll be played but not at true reso?

....does any of them or new one support .mkv (BRDRips) or .mp4 (HD Rips)?

....Totaly confused about the brands:
Philips
Moser Baer (ShiT)
Hier (no Idea)
Samsung
Pioneer (dont think i'd like to buy in grey w/o bill / warranty from alfa)
Sony .... You Sure??? They had pathetic issues with their Hi Fi music systems and pathetic service / parts replacements.

Dont want cheapos like Mitashi / T-Series, etc

....Budget is within 5k.
....TIA

PS: Please dont pass me the links to the previous threads as i've gone thru them and are for old products most of them are not available.

PS: Also if anybody is aware of some special offer going on in any of the malls or showroom then please pass on the details :)

.....Need to buy in the coming week,
...Please Help!!

u need to edit ur thread starting post........

Add ( SHIT) next to Philips...... they are absolute garbage, may be some what better than local companies. I have used 3 DVD players ( replacements ) of them in 2 yrs and still not satisfied with their products....
On top of that they have so much confidence of their products that.... they have reduced warrenty from 1yr to 6 months now .

I insist.... forget about philips

If u r from Mumbai -> and also have any exiting DVD player Non working junk. -> go to vijay sales and Buy a Decent Phillips 5996 or 5986
for today you will get 1000 bucks off for any old junk

I'd pick between Samsung / Philips. Pioneer is the best best but that's way outside your budget (Around 12k with bill IIRC).

Hmm.. lot of education needed :)

A normal DVD resolution would be like 720X480. An HDTV will have minimum resolution 720p (1280X720). So an upscaling DVD player would upscale the DVDs resolution to HDTV standards. All HDMI based DVD players are upscaling DVD players since HDMI port will output only HDTV standard resolutions like 480p, 720p and 1080p.
If you have CRT then its pointless to buy upscaling DVD players.

None of upscaling DVD players handle resolution greater than 720X480 so you cannot play 720p AVI. MKV will not even be recognized, forget about playing. For that only computer connected with TV can work.

Original DVDs usually come with audio track in Dolby sound format for which all DVD players have decoder and hence can be played. Some DVDs come additionally with DTS audio track. That sound cannot be played with DVD players who do not have decoder for it. Not really a problem since DTS soundtrack is always an add-on. Dolby sound will always be there DVDs.

I recommend Philips - Cheap and good! Have worked well for me since past 5 years.

For playing .avi & .mkv encoded in HD Xvids & h264's, best bet is to plugin/HDMI ur laptop to ur Big screen LCD's or plasmas & njoy the perfection of HD videos:period.
DVD's with whatever compatibility r passe, mayb this was good 2-4 years ago,NOt this Diwali !!!

Well my cousin bro is using Philips since 2 years now and havent faced even a single problem..works like charm...has USB 2.0 plug in and damn easy to plug and play from USB and HDDs. Still Which one u suggesT?

And WTF! are u guys sure Philips are just giving 6 months warranty?

And is it safe to buy DVD Player from Alfa? or its better of in Malls and showrooms?

...And again... what about the dvdrips with AC3 audio codec?

yea even my philips came with only 6 months warranty ... had to spend 500rs for fixing the lens. don't consider philips 3xxx players ..

as rshri said in the previous posts. every dvd comes with a 5.1 Dolby sound track (read AC3 5.1) and some dvds also have a DTS sound track additionally.

DTS is similar to dolby but better to hear.

so if you have dvd rips with AC3 5.1 sound track every dvd player shold be able to play it. Most of the times rippers simply put the audio track in to the rip as it is (without transcoding audio). and some times they transcode it to 2 channel AC3 (IMO which does not add any value over 2ch mp3)

as for mkv goes, mkv supports almost all the formats on the earth. but mkvs usually pack H264 video and AAC audio.
