I used to get Power calibration errors when using my Samsung drive for writing CDs on my old P1 system. I then used Nero DriveSpeed and reduced all speeds (read and write) from 10x to 4x. I was then able to successfully write CDs. My opinion is that while many media cannot sustain write speeds that they declare, sub standard writers cannot write CDs at they speeds they claim possible too. It could also be a combination of writer and CD incompatibility also.
Btw, many people claim that moser baer media are very good but I have been writing CDs for about seven years now and I don't feel that they are as good. I've faced a lot of issues with these media. I personally like Imation media. Sony media are good too but beware of fakes. Sometime back, there was an article on TE on how to identify your media via software. Hope someone has the link.
If you want my opinion on CD writer brands, stay away from cheap chinese or lesser reputed brands. Even Samsung is no good. Their RAM ICs and HDDs are good but not their assembled components like CD drives, floppy drives, mobile phones etc. Don't know much about LG but I would not touch Benq or Lite-on no matter what technology they claim.
I had an HP writer and it never gave me issues. Next time, buy NEC, Pioneer or Plextor(if you can get one from abroad) or at least a Sony writer from India.
