Fans of demons and epic warfare will get a treat at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles where Namco Bandai will be demonstrating Hellgate: London and Warhammer: Mark of Chaos. Both games feature hellish demons, but in different settings. Hellgate: London is a first-person "shooter", while Warhammer is a massive real-time strategy game.

In Hellgate: London players must fight off demons that are streaming through a hellgate. Players take on the role of a Templar which is a modern day knight complete with swords and guns that shoot electricity. Fights take place both on the surface and underground in subway tunnels.

Fans of combat on a more massive scale may enjoy Warhammer: Mark of Chaos. Drawing on the tabletop miniature game from Games Workshop, Warhammer: Mark of Chaos pits the four armies of the Empire, Skaven, Chaos and High Elves in mortal combat against each other.

An exclusive look at Will Wright's forthcoming universe simulator Spore.

"Simulation" has always been one of the most difficult game genres to classify. Considering it includes everything from historical battles to baseball games heavy on statistics, it's not uncommon for two games to sit next to each other in the category and have absolutely nothing in common. With Spore, Will Wright and his team are creating a game so ambitious that you should be able to choose elements of pretty much any other simulation game and find something comparable. It's the first simulation game that tries to simulate just about everything.

"In some sense, it's about stepping back and getting a sense of all the different things the universe is made of at all the different scales," says Wright. "At the higher levels of the game, one of the things you can research is genetic engineering, at which point you can access the creature editor for free and you can design as many creatures as you want, and use them to populate worlds. You could recreate an entire ecosystem designing every creature in it."

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. We recently had the chance to visit with Wright and other members of the Spore development team during their crunch phase for next week's Electronic Entertainment Expo presentation, to figure out more on how the creation aspects of the game work and see how the game has come along in the past year.

This E3 is certainly going to be the most interesting. It will feature the final unveilings of the next-gen. Capcom also plans to release some Re5 info, we can also expect a lot on Mgs4, GoW2, GTA LC on Ps2 and WWE SM vs Raw 2k7.

All this week, the $31 billion global video game industry will have the Hollywood spotlights shining exclusively upon it, as even the old MGM Studios have been rented out to help stage one of the biggest showdowns in the history of the entertainment industry. The Electronic Entertainment Expo officially commences next Wednesday, but Monday will be high noon, as the first of the next-generation consoles - Sony's PlayStation 3 - makes its world premiere.

Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it, as the saying goes. This is wise advice, and so is the following: beware of the hype.

People are already salivating over new titles that will be teased, previewed and promoted at E3 this year. Attendees will undoubtedly scour the Los Angeles Convention Center for peeks at future releases like Halo 3, Will Wright's Spore, and, of course, a double-shot of Legend of Zelda with Phantom Hourglass and Twilight Princess.

While we're on the subject of folk wisdom, remember the old adage that if something looks too good to be true, then it probably is. This isn't always the case, as some of the trailers for the titles listed below proved to be fairly honest indicators of what was to come. However, it's no secret that many people have been wowed by a 60-second clip of a forthcoming game, or even an actual demo version, and ended up disappointed once they actually purchased the title.

A quick look at the E3 2005 show report reveals the games that were the talk of the town a year ago. With E3 2006 around the corner, it's worth taking a glimpse in the rear-view mirror at last year's show to see which games delivered and which ones fizzled after the big event.

Video Games and the Hi-Def Format Wars

Reuters has a concise but interesting article up about how video games will help decide the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD. According to industry analysts "What Sony and Microsoft decide to announce publicly or to dealers at E3 next week will be key." So this year's E3 could very well be a deciding factor in how you view your movie library for years to come.
