Hi guys... i need a help from u guys.. i just finished ma BE in mech, we have a family business which includes steel industry, Food products etc.

I want to pursue a good degree which gives me good knowledge in management skills, finance, accounts etc. which will help me in my business

I prefer EMBA as it can be completed in 1 year and i can join the business , which Uni will be the best suited for me.. should be in the best rankings ...

Executive MBAs require some amount of work experience. In the US even for a normal MBA candidates with work experience are give a higher priority. No idea about Aus.
2009 rankings. might be biased too. check the work experience column.
Top Executive MBA Programs - Businessweek

The Best International Business Schools 2010: INSEAD Ousts Queen's from the No. 1 Spot - BusinessWeek

Any particular reason for only US/Aus? There are very good options here in India too. ISB has an executive program which requires a 5+years of experience. They have other courses too. Even IIMs have EMBAs but experience is required for those too.

Almost all of these schools/Universities have a varied range of courses. Since your objective is fixed and you will be joining the family business, choose the one which best suits your requirements. Rushing through this not recommended and the 1 year programs are generally focused on specializations. If you want a general overview of handling a business and want to do it in a year, you will have very few good options, if any.

Have you given any thought to looking after the business, learning the ropes there for a few years and then going for a crash course on improving your knowledge in whatever department you feel necessary?

MBA abroad usually requires an avg work experience of 3-7 years.

EMBA requires a minimum work exp of 5-10 years and usually an avg around 10 years or so.

This work experience is defined as work experience after graduation and full time work exp, not part time.

There are only 2 universities in Australia which make it to the Top 100 in the world and you shouldn't even think of No.3.

You can however consider UK as well.

Aus and UK MBA cost like 25-40 lacs approx for their tenure!, total that is!

US regular MBA is like 60-75+ lacs avg depending on the college, total for 2 years. EMBA might be a few lacs less because although it is just one year, the single year's fees is more!

I would say go for a regular MBA after you have a work experience of 3-4 years in your family business.

And it is very important that you grow your biz, preferably 3-5 times at least in these 3-5 years to be considered a strong candidate for MBA from a good college!

I don't think there are any such programs in World's Top 100 colleges! And if it isn't close or at least within the Top 100 World league, don't waste money on it!

yup

a regular MBA, not EMBA.

And get 4-7 years full time post grad work exp before you join the course.

And try to aim for a 700-750 GMAT score, and if possible top 20-30%ile college grades

Looking for something like that in US or Aus
if you want to stay back and handle your family managed business, then why do you want to spend more money for MBA courses in US/UK. Instead use that money to make more money out of it. invest wisely. 40 lacs is a huge sum.

^ Hehe... what I am looking for is a good exposure along with the studies... am sure it ll help me a lot, and also getting experience and then go to fetch MBA is really out of question in my case, coz once in to business, it won't be easy to go and do MBA then... Coz getting married , family and blah blah...

Anish I would suggest IIM or ISB Ex-MBA over US/AU unless you dream of Harvard/Stanford degree. In anycase for Ex MBA you would need a minimum work exp of about 4yrs. So why don't you just try for a Regular MBA from IIM/ISB/IMT as you have to take care of your own business time should not be an issue for you :)

What I would say is

If you have to do a MBA it has to be either IIM A B C L OR ISB H if you want to consider India. ]

FMS, SP Jain etc don't make it to the top 100 in the world, don't even come close for that matter.

It is for those who can't afford to spend 80 lacs on a good MBA. If you have the money then it is either these five in India or Top 50-100 in the world!

can you make a big enough "donation" to one of them? What kind of an answer do you expect if you know that you do not qualify according to the recruitment criteria?

Did you check out the forum I had mentioned earlier? You will get much better and precise answers there.

If you are confused you can atleast work for a year and find out the answers to all your questions regarding how to proceed with the right MBA. In the mean time, prepare and give the necessary entrance exams etc...

MBA is not some magic wand which will give you superhuman abilities. It definitely helps if you want to give a boost to your career. In your case, you already have a family business and you know what you will be doing careerwise. You don't need an MBA to enhance your résumé. The best option would be to go for it after geting some experience. Even doing some specific short term courses will do instead of an entire 2 year package if you feel that time would be an issue.
