England out of Euro 2008

The biggest factor, that they are exhausted (if not injured) with club level games already to be able to give their all at the national level. If they reduce the number of annual club games this might be easily achieved, but then i guess a lot of ppl will get pissed at the reduction in what they have become used to and demand. There are more club games in the brit leagues per season compared to those on the continent.

The biggest reason why England has failed is the manager IMO. Eriksson was great, I don't know why he was criticized so much.

The fact is, when coaching a national team, it is impossible for the manager to adopt a new style of play, and then tell the players to play according to that style. Simply because, international matches don't allow the players to change to new style of playing their football. They are best at doing what they do at their clubs. It's impossible for Lampard to play well in England, because he won't get the freedom in midfield he gets in Chelsea.

So, what a manager should do is to find a strategy so that he can accommodate the styles of all the players he has. This obviously means that he can't always pick Gerrard and Lampard in the same team because it's impossible for both of them to play to their 100% in a setup like this. You would normally drop Lampard as the formation in Chelsea (4-3-3) can't really be played in the national team. The coach should have the balls to do this, and pick someone like Hargreaves who can do a job like Mascherano in Liverpool, allow Gerrard to do what he does best. I am 100% if this happens, you'll probably see a different Gerrard playing for England. It's upto to the manager to find a strategy so that all players can fit in that strategy, and it is this sort of manager that England should look for now.

Am a n00b in football among all you football experts so dont flame me :(.

^Eriksson was fired as he could not lead england past the group stages.

He chose walcott and didnt play him in the WC at all!!

He didnt pick Jamie Carragher (MOTD commentators called him a bottler and he phoned up the show and scolded them, have that interview if anyone wants but i doubt anyone would understand his heavy scouse accent).

Eriksson is great at club level, with his exploits at Lazio as proof, but not good at national level. Barry was awesome in the last few matches but he didnt perform against croatia, the lad is so underrrated. People like Andy Johnson and James beattie have been overlooked (Beattie is bangin in goals for fun for the blades).

England selection suxxxxxxx.

Q. What's the difference between Lewis Hamilton and the England team?

A. Lewis Hamilton will still have a McLaren in the morning :P

that is so so wrong ... u pick strategy and then pick players suited to it not pick strategy suited to the all the super stars he has and fit them in

Actually, it works both ways. It is impossible for a manager to pick a strategy, and then force all the players to change their styles, as international footballers don't meet that often. Obviously, he has to pick a strategy, and pick players suited to it, but, he also has to pick a strategy keeping in mind the strengths of his main players.

trying to figure out what went wrong in this mess will take some time.

Is it that a flawed strategy was used, and that the players could not react or read the opposition as the opposition themselves did ?

..who knows :)

muahahhaah..... nice nice :D
now that means rooney and other english players get good rest before next season :D
