English TV series discussion

Watched the first 2 episodes of the new season of Black Mirror (Season 7):

Episode 1 - This left me so with goosebumps and chills in the end. Man, what an episode, hits HARD!

Episode 2 - Fantastic story and characterization but sadly the last 10 minutes ruined it for me. I know it's Black Mirror but it just felt way too gibberish with the way the writing went. On a side note, the blonde actress looks like a young version of Nicole Kidman!

Also, finally completed all 3 seasons of From! I went very slow with this, watching an episode a day over lunch or dinner. That way it didn't get too hackneyed or boring. I tried doing 2-3 episodes back to back but it somehow made me sleepy so I discarded that approach. The show is a classic mystery box with each episode raising more questions and answering absolutely nothing with any sense of clarity, LoL! I hated that only to love it over time. This like The Walking Dead kept me watching even though I should have probably quit. I believe the longer you watch a show the more invested you become in the characters and this was no exception to that. The wait for Season 4 begins now...

Severence: What the F is this show? Is this for those who had had some sort of brain surgery themselves? Don't like it one bit. All those fake cheeky wide jawed smiles. An exceedingly annoying and unenjoyable show. Probably the only one which I'll stop watching in middle.

It's one of those hate it to love it kind of shows. It's such a tease at times but then grows on you. It'll drive you up the wall at times with how odd it gets but then you'll fall back down that vertical wall only to sink further into it's plot and in the end it will leave you with one of the most atrociously wonderful and yet question riddled finales out there.

If you plan on continuing, I say take it an episode a day. That's it. Then read up on that episode online before proceeding just to be sure you have grasped everything and haven't missed the nuances (this show has a ton of them!) to be abreast of the plot in it's entirety.

I struggled somewhat to see the first episode and lost interest...it didn't even keep me hooked to continue. Have to try later again.

It's a slow burn or slow bake for watchers. You either like it or hate it. Starting is definitely slow, especially the first episode.
I'd rate it 8/10.

We finally got new season of Black Mirror, man you can not tell me the last season was only 2 years ago. It feels more like 4-5 years lol to me. I haven't started it yet but will savour it when I do.
We also have a new Devil may cry TV series. Not an anime which I would have preferred but at least as a DMC fan who has played all the games and watched the 2007 anime I'm glad to see some action going.

Survived first episode somehow but couldn't finish second so watched summery on youtube and marked this series as complete so I don't end up spending time on it when new season comes in future.

When you see adjectives like 'Dystopian', 'Psychological', 'Conspiracy' & then 'Sci-Fi' with 'Thriller' ...

The first three mean you took a wrong turn somewhere

The last two mean RUN :nailbiting:

I am someone who likes Severance. Like 9/10. But I understand completely where you (and others who don't like it) are coming from. I have tried and never been able to complete The Office whereas both my brother and best friend swear by it, and are convinced I'm just messing with them and secretly enjoy it. I like the parts where it is about stupid jokes and pranks (i.e. Dwight), but I cannot stand cringe (i.e. Michael). Whenever he makes an ass of himself, I get strong second-hand embarrassment and just straight-up stop enjoying the show for weeks. Have stopped trying to force-enjoy it.

Coming back to Severance, I think most people like it (or at least I like it) because it has deep metaphors layered that you can feel/sense some of them without understanding everything that is going on and just as you understand a bit more, new mysteries pop up. Casting, characterization, acting is topnotch. The characters feel shallow and lifeless for the first 2-3 episodes, but they are meant to be, imagine you are stripped of everything that makes you, memories, life experiences etc. Once you get to know them more, watch more episodes, you understand better and even connect with them. Their desire to know more (why this is happening to them), slow-burning return to human feelings and failings, it's all very fascinating and enjoying for me. Some of the main characters have completely different innie and outie personas (people who they are inside and who they are outside) and it's a marvel to see the actors play them. The satire on corporate culture and society overall also feels fresh without sounding like a repetitive lecture.

It's also very very well made, the music, the sets and cinematography are some of the best in recent years. (I know most people don't care about such things and only care about story and action/drama. But after you watch a plethora of cookie-cutter TV shows that all look, feel and sound the same, you start appreciating these things.)

But again, no point in force-enjoying anything. There's just too much out there to watch and read and play. My existential crisis is that I'm never going to be able to finish all the good books because I watch too much TV and movies (and also because I am not immortal yet). Just have to remind myself again and again to enjoy what I can and skip what I can't.

This had happend with me around Covid, prior to that I only like simple, drama like tv shows. But then something happend (I think it was Mindhunter tv show) which completely changed my whole experience and taste.

BlackMirror season 7, episode 1. Never disappointed, can't tell you I ever thought of this much of emotion and great story.

I get this, i found 1st season of office hard to watch but then it really grew on me. Esp once dwight started being funny.
I get Michael cringe too, yet somehow he makes the show better, once he left it definitely felt worse and multiple good actors couldn't quite replace him.

Its probably just under community for me for funny shows.

Yes, I have watched 3-4 seasons through multiple tries but always ended up quitting once the cringe becomes too much. And yeah, I like Michael when he is vulnerable and child-like, and I actually like Carell a lot, his acting is what makes me want to sit through it. I can see I am contradicting myself here a bit, but I like child-like Michael, I hate watching cringe Michael when he makes it uncomfortable for everyone else. It is what it is.

I love Community and Parks and Rec (after S3). The cringe factor played by Pierce in Community or Tom/Aziz in PnR are peripheral and somehow easily ignored.

That cringe is part of the show. You don't want to see it but you want to see it to see how everyone's story progresses.
Michael's cringe is his vulnerability and pettiness, and that's what he is.
Have watched reruns so many times that I've lost count. The show loses its charm once Steve Carell leaves. Some heartfelt moments legit make you cry - it's a phenomenal show IMO (may not work for everyone).

Black Mirror S07 - Episode 3 was so amazing to watch! Such an unique and interesting concept and so well made. A lot of people on Reddit hated it but not me. Absolutely loved watching it through and then at the very end of the episode...

The San Junipero mention... neat little Easter Egg!

San Junipero still stands as one of my top 3 episodes across all seasons of Black Mirror!
