CPU/Mobo ethyl alcohol for cleaning cpu hs

Can I use ethyl alcohol(surgical spirit) instead of IPA to clean cpu, heatsink?Ethyl alcohol is easier to get in hyderabad.
 
Sure, though my suggestion will be this awesom-o cleaning thing called MinCream. The bottle looks like brasso and it works great for removing HS Paste as well as dirt.

Are you sure that's safe?I hope you do know that brasso is a flammable and a corrosive substance which leaves a protection coat behind?

As far as the OP is concerned, dont you get isopropyl alcohol over there in medical stores?

I have checked a lot of medical stores here. They dont have IPA, the don't even what it is :(. I can get it at chemical stores probably, but they sell 5 litre bottles :(. If IPA is more preferrable, I would get one today.Though I have to travel a bit for it.

I use surgical spirit available in medical stores for the same purpose without any problems. Except for the strong smell, it leaves no residue behind.
 
Computer dealers and electronic repair shops can sell u IPA 100ml bottles for cheap.
 
Thanks all. Managed to get IPA from a chemical in shop in Ramkoti. 99.5% AR grade 500ml for Rs. 270. Paid more than I exptected :)
 
^^thats daylight robbery! same 500ml 99.5% purity lab grade IPA is for rs60-70 locally.
are you sure that IPA you bought? looking at the price i think it might be ethyl alcohol
 
total overkill

one wont require more than 5ml at once.

using Acetone that can be found at medical stores for 8 bucks for 22ml..

have cleaned hs n cpu several times n there still lasts half of that 22ml in the bottle..

for those who havent bought the same yet...

500ml will last whole year even if u clean ur cpu n hs every alternate day :P

alternate usage.. : Pour in water n put the water on fire :)
 
If u go to a medical store and ask them for isolpropyl alochol they will be like...@@@@@ :bleh:

U can just ask them for alcohol swabs or cotton swabs and u would have got ur isopropyl alcohol for 2 bucks a swab...:rofl:

AR is analytical reagent which is a very high quality grade used for sensitive calibrations and other such work. It is usually very costly. The other grades include SLR (Standard Lab Reagent) which is usually cheaper (probably what you got; used in most schools and colleges for routine lab work) and the ACS grade which is probably the costliest.

The OP needn't have bought such a high quality alcohol, and so much of quantity; 500ml will last a lifetime provided he keeps it sealed and safe from evaporating. :P
 
I agree with all of you , I paid a lot more than I should have, and anyway at that cost I could have gor arctic cleaning kit :D. I was searching for IPA for a few days, so when I got it I just took it. And he will not give me IPA < 500ml. And I did get injection swabs which had 70% IPA for Rs 2, but most suggested me to get atleast above 90% to avoid human error. Now I would give it to everybody who needs it to clean their cpu in Hyderabad :D
 
I use IPA from this company MERCK(mumbai) its Rs228:O for 500ml bottle:hap2:.I use it give my ip35-e a complete bath :rofl:.
