I had a source who talked to airtel distributor of my city. He said that the phone will cost 18k-22k and they have the instructions to strictly sell it with the new connection, however they have'nt received any tariff details yet. He even confirmed that they have already got the phones in stock and ready to sell it on 22nd august. And those rumours of 31k are all false.

I read in yesterday's mid-day (Mumbai edition) that Apple will deliver the phones to both the operators on Midnight of 22nd August.

From what i feel neither Airtel nor Vodafone are so atupid to price the phone like that.

I guess it will be priced like Rs.13,500 downpayment and Rs.750 every month for 24months(750*24=18000).

So now total comes to Rs.31,500.

doesnt sound bad...but if srsly this is way its gonna happen..then its still not worth it! That fone for that price isnt worth it...considering the proprietary shit of APPLE which stinkS!

Some of the articles published are outright ignorant and misleading, '3G charges', what's that? Do they not know there is no 3G in India. The least the journalist can do is to be informed on the sector he is writing about, and at the very least do some basic research instead of making a fool of themselves. And then they wonder why they are losing readership. The same thing happened about the so called 'wifi hacking' in the recent case.

Back to topic 31k can only appeal to a small segment who are more interested in showing off and that's a small, fickle and irrelevant market unless you are a niche product or want to be. If iPhone wants to be a niche product then they will price it at some thing ridiculous.

Either these articles are being intentionally circulated by Vodaphone/Airtel PR so when they launch at a lower price it seems 'cheap' but that's plain boneheaded. Let's wait and see, hope they don't botch this for consumers.

btw do airtel and vodafone provide edge internet access? If so, anyone knows of pricing and speed of the service?

Edge is available in many places. But not all over India. Airtel Edge speeds are ok-ish. Pricing differs from place to place and from prepaid to postpaid.

Both Airtel and Vodaphone have edge though I think Airtel is cheaper than Vodaphone, at roughly 350-400 PM for Mobile Office. NOP through proxy is 150 PM. There is a data limit on Mobile office I think. You would have to check on their sites to get the exact figures.

However the iPhone plans and prices they offer will be similar, the PR person admitted in one of the articles they are discussing it between themselves! isn't that cartelization?

:P :P :P :P

"Upgrading my old iphone to 2.0.1 ".......

ok..lets for a second suppose the phone is launched for 31k..

do u guys think the phone will sell? i think itll still be sold out.

lets think of it this way..

the reason why most of us are disappointed after hearing those rumours are because when we heard the 199 dollar us pricing, we thought that it would cost us max say -16k, which is double the us rate. suppose we werent aware of any international pricing, or lets say that someone just showed you the iphone for the first time, dont u think the 31k price wouldnt seem that much? the n95 was launched for approx 40k last year. lots of people bought it at that rate. the rate fell to 32-34k and many more people. the iphone has generated a lot of hype.. much more than the n95 ever did and it will be available in limited quantity. moreover, this phone will have a genuine warranty umlike the old gen grey mkt iphone.

i know that at 31k, lots of people will be disappointed. lots of us will look at alternatives, but the fact is that we got our hopes up because of the us pricing. but the fact is, the us pricing doesnt mean anything. lots of top end phones that we buy here are practically free with contracts in the states. the iphone sells for 1 euro in germany. that doesnt mean that we can expect it for 2 euros by adding duties etc here does it? the phones that we spend 15k for here are provided free with contracts in the us. the very fact that they are having to pay 200 dollars for a phone under a contract means that its gonna be really expensive here.

having said that, i, like everyone here hopes that it falls in the 16-18k range with a contract. thats what im willing to pay. n i too like everyone here will be extremely dissapointed if the rumours indicating the 31k price are true. after those rumours, ive started looking at alternatives too.

i totally hate the idea of 31k pricing... this is just so ridiculous... think I'll wait for a year or so if it does not fall below 20k... dont want to give up my dream for a PMP phone with excellent ergonomics... come on Apple.. ( or should I say Airtel/Vodafone) give us a chance.
