okay so my good friend wants to assemble a killer rig
his budget is 40k for a cpu,mobo,ram & psu

he has decided to buy the armor cabby and already has a 4870 1gb
i thought of suggesting the following

q9550
Gskill Pi Black 4gb Kit
Corsair hx 1000 or the TX750
Mobo ?
Suggestions would be welcome , i thought i7 wudnt perform better for his budget or would it ?

Go for an i7 setup. The power supplies you have listed are overkill. The Tagan BZ800 or Corsair 600-700W will be more than enough

sorry ankit , no 2nd hand , some detailed configs of which i7 i can get in the budget would be appreciated

from New Hit from Remake King: Intel Core i7 Review (page 12) - X-bit labs
We have already mentioned several times that Core i7 is not very well suited for gaming. Nevertheless, things are not as bad as you may think. CPU on Nehalem microarchitecture falls behind quad-core processors from Core 2 family only in several games. Overall, Core i7 and Core 2 Quad perform quite comparably.

By the way, I have to say that developers are not rushing to optimize their games for multi-core processor architectures. We are constantly updating our list of gaming benchmarks looking for optimizations like that, however, nothing changes too much. Even the newest 3D shooters, such as Crysis WAREHEAD or Far Cry 2 work best of all on dual-core processors. Therefore, it still doesn’t make sense to put a quad-core CPU into a gaming system.

am also worried about people reporting that the x58 is an unstable platform and the microstuttering some people experience in games ,spending so much n then gettin headaches would be an issue...........thoughts?

me running a i7 940 with 6 gb ddr3 @ 1600 on a rampage II extreme.

Video card is a 4870x2

Have not come across a single issue yet.

Games played so far are crysis , crysis warhead , COD 4 & 5 , Fear 2 , Half Life , Half life 2 , Counter strike source and Team Fortress. , Far cry 2 , World in Conflict .

so id say most the early issues have been sorted out by driver/chipset/bios updates.

hope this helps guys :)

yep..

the gigabyte is better board for sure..

also if your friend can stretch his budget a little then he can look at the asus P6T. that is also a very good mobo.

but for the $$ the giyabyte is a fantastic board.

cheers :)

Just 1 thing what is the main point of buying this "killer" rig ?

If its gaming it would be nice to know what kind of resolution he would be gaming at.

Hi there. Well, the good friend that SoulFire is talking about is me :)
This is what i have thought of purchasing and if there is any change needed then tell me about it.
1) MSI X58 PRO Motherboard
2) Intel i7-920 CPU
3) Corsair XMS3 3gb RAM 1333Mhz Triple Channel
4) Armor+MX Cabinet
5) Tagan BZ800 PSU
6) Sound card? please suggest a good one

How does the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R compare to the MSI X58 PRO in features and performance?
And the ram that i mentioned, is that good enough?
I have a 22" Dell so the max res i would play on is 1600X1200.

3GB is too little for modern standards, especially for a "killer rig". Get a TC 3x2GB OCZ/Gskill set. Memory consumption can easily cross 3GB in a normal system running on Vista. Go for 1600Mhz rated RAM if you can. The price difference isn't all that much but the bandwidth jumps by a significant amount.

Xonar DX (or D2X) for the sound card.

Dunno the exact specs of the X58 Pro but Gigabyte's color scheme is way better than MSI's. I think the UD3R has got more ports and slots as well, although I think the X58 Pro has ESATA which the UD3R doesn't.

Edit (From anandtech forums):

On the X58 Pro-

"If you aren't overclocking and aren't going to be running fast "enthusiast" RAM, then they will work fine.

While they are improving with every BIOS release, RAM support still isn't as good as the Asus P6T or the Intel X58SO, both of which I've also used. With those two boards, "enthusiast" 1600MHz RAM just plain works. Set it to specified settings (or enable XMP) and voila! With the MSI board... Also, overclocking isn't as good. The Asus P6T was able to clock my 965 test chip to 4GHz easy on stock voltage. None of the three MSI has been able to do that. Closest I've gotten was 3.87GHz with vCore and vQPI boosts. "

****Dont buy thermaltake armor mx series.. it really bad.. no newer cards will fit inside it.. i had the same cases and ipgrade my video card to 4850x2 and it didnt fit.. hence i had to buy CM690..

The Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R is not available.
1) Any ideas where in Mumbai i might find it? The UD5 SLI is there but i have a ATI card.
2) I will buy 4gb ram instead of 3gb.
3) And what about the Asus p6T. Is that a good mobo?
4) Gigabyte UD5 no good? So from what i have read in all the comments here, what should i finally buy?
5) What should be my final config? I am damn confused.

1. U can use ATi card on SLi mobo, no prob.

2. i7 platform performs best w/ triple channel memory, 4GB is not symmetric.

3. Yes, its decent mobo

Just buy Biostar X58, and U dont need Tagan 800W etc, no need. TX 650W enough. and get HAF 932/CM 690/Antec 1200 etc. In US price differance in 3GB and 6GB is 40$, 6GB from US will cost same as 3GB from India.

get the P6T if your budget allows.

That board just works right out of the box.

Supremely stable. Brilliant support in terms of updates/fixes. And Asus quality.

The capacitors on that board are in a different league.

Have installed 2 P6T Deluxe palm oc boards for friends. Could not be happier.

also please get atleast 6 GB of DDR3 1600 mhz. Triple channel kits are a necessity for peak memory bandwidth.

Corsair Tx750 or Hx 620 is good enough as well.

just my 2 cents :)

cheers :)
