Hi guys, I borrowed an external drive from my dad. I was using it, and it was working just fine. I tried to copy something between the partitons on the drive, but it was too slow, so I cancelled it. Comp was slow, so I decided to restart. When the comp booted, it detected a new usb device (it had already done so before). It was installing the software, and it said device was ready to be used. But, it didn't detect the drive now. I tried to put the USB wire again, but it still didn't work. Now, it's not even working in other computers. When I put it in, it starts vibrating, then stops, and the light keeps on blinking from red to green.

Another thing, when the drive was working, Partition Magic was showing some message about 'Partition Table is Bad'. Now, it's not

Now, I am really desperate that this starts working, my dad would kill me otherwise. Please Help!

PS Drive is local one I think, it just written for IBM Travelstar on the drive.

Anyone please!

Edit : I think I realized what's wrong. USB port on the hard drive is burnt I think (it smells like that anyways). I used it for a long time (I have USB 1.1, so it took 3-4 hours), but if it burnt, it should have just gone out like that, not when I restarted.

One thing I forgot to mention was, when I was restarting the computer, a couple of messages came out, that x file (cant remember the name), could not be copied to M: (on of the partions). Data has been lost.

I really, really need help

Thanks

Take out the HDD from the casing first !

I guess its 2.5" HDD .. so only choice you have is look for another casing and give a try.Dont worry about the data it should be safe.

Got a scolding of a lifetime from dad! Glad it's over now

Tried another casing, didn't work. Must be something with the hard drive? Any suggesions? Will I be able to recover the data?

If the HDD does not spin or has some mechanical probs (motor fault etc) there is not much to be done. If it has warranty, better send it for repairs.

If there is no such fault, you can try to retrieve the data using softwares like Rstudio.

The HDD spins when I connect it first, but then stops. Will I lost any data? Is it possible to recover the data?

Worth trying the HDD in new casing on someone else's comp to make sure that the issue is with the HDD. If HDD is spinning and some clicking or grinding sound is heard repeatedly, the head might have crashed onto the platter.

It might also be that the HDD is unable to get enough power to run in the new casing. Are you using a USB cable with an extra USB connector for power connected to cabinet along with the regular USB connector?

Ive tried another casing and another comp as well. The HDD starts spinning, but then slows down, and stops. No, I normally just connect one USB connector to the my cabinet, not 2.
