Bumping this thread since I might also be needing an external DVD-RW. But I dont need it for my dad, I need it for my laptop. :bleh:

Never really came across 1 in India. Atleast not at Lamington Road.

i've been using dvd300e (at work) but amazon is comin up with a huge 189/- odd price.
i like this one. didnt give me any problems. wrote quite some cds and dvds off this. works good with nero. connected through usb. separate power adaptor.

lookin for in a dvdw: usb needed. firewire not necessary. around INR 6000/-. needs to be good at writing with less problems since my dad wont be able to trouble-shoot them.

u can use a casing with an internal writer. Just don't move it around while burning :P

if it was for me, then it would have been okay. do you think it's easy to do? remember, dad would be doin all that.

thanks!! atleast that way this thread would get some reads. ;)

Phone Futech Computers located on Lamington Road on 2380 0997 / 5279 ....I remember seeing an ad for an external Iomega writer..... maybe a CD Writer - check anyway.

Also check with Prime if Plextor external DVD writers available.

There are external casings meant just for use with optical drives. Get them and they should work as one single unit not requiring any extra effort - just like external drives should. www.deltapage.com shows some for CDROM/RW. They should work very well.

does anyone think if dad gets the same one like mine (benq dw1640) and he would be able to get the casing for it too? both from mumbai?

External Cases are easily available.. n quite cheap too.. shud cost u about 800~900 bucks i think.. get a DVD-RW drive of ur choice, put it in the case, make the connections properly n u have a mobile drive. I have been using external case fro HDD, but the case for optical drives is much bigger than the ones for HDDs.. simple n cost effective solution, if u compare prices for IOmega or Plextor external burners..

I am using a internal Benq1640 DVDRW drive along with a external casing .You can get a Techcom case like this one here, cost about Rs.700, its specifically for 5.25" drives and its got a power adapter included and a Type B USB connector.

I was able to use the drive externally along with a laptop successfully and burn numerous DVDs, but recently there has been many failed burns. It starts the burn process and after about 10% it stops, nero shows that the program is working but the progress bar doesn't proceed and results in a bad media. It has happened repeatedly for about 5 times, even reinstalling the OS and software didn't help. After that I haven't tried it anymore and I was not able to find the time to research on it.

So what I am trying to say is that the cheapest option might not be the best option. If its for your dad, then its better to go for a branded external dvd writer which will be reliable.

Not fair when i had posted a HDD comparision from Digit Crazy_Eddy deleted it saying its copywrite violation and you have posted articles about -

1) Logitech G15.
2) Sunny's Article.
3) External DVD-RW Drives.

Still no action taken.

The Techcom has these problems and is well know to be a POS. It causes "Delayed Write Failures" with my hard disk and cdwriter too!! Avoid it like the plague.

I got a better one for 1.2k and its been working like a charm :) Get a good brand name and you should be fine. Btw, I also have a Adcom Converter for Rs600 which works very well - so might wanna try that too!

@Easy : LOL did these moronic digit guys test the burners without testing for write quality? :S

"WRITE QUALITY" with a DVDRW drive ??? is that an important criteria ?? :ohyeah:

They reported the BENQ 1640's plus points as "None in Particular" ... the HORROR of it !!! The BEST BUY award was given to a LiteON Super ALLWrite SHM-165P6S (Jeese what a name to remember :( ) ...... anyone tried this drive ?
