Hey,

What's the best external hard drive that is 1TB that is available at the moment?

Tell me the best one which needs a power source and the best one without a power source.
With both the hard drives, I should be able to plug it into a mac and a windows without any problems.

Also, how much more expensive is a 1TB without a power source than one with a power source?

Thanks

There are two types of external HDD's.
i) Bulky ones which require a power adapter and consists of the 3.5" 7200RPM desktop HDD's.
Price: 1TB WD Essential/ 1TB Seagate FreeAgent ~ 4.4-4.5k

ii) Small, ultraportable ones(no external power adapter needed) that fits in a trouser pocket consists of the 2.5" 5400RPM laptop HDD's
Price: 1TB WD Passport/ 1TB Seagate FreeAgent GO ~ 8.4-8.5k

Exactly. I want to know the best in both. Best bulky hard drive and best non-bulky hard drive.

Also, if I use the hard drive on a windows, can I also use it on a mac?

Im also thinking to buy WD 1.5TB My Book Essential....Im getting it for 6.5k locally... should i go for it?

FAT32 is the best free way to format a drive cross platform, but the best way is to buy MacDrive (Mediafour | MacDrive) and install it on your Windows computer, then to format the drive as HFS+. This is the native format for Macs, and with MacDrive it is read very nicely in Windows. No more ._ files, and things will just work more smoothly everywhere.

(Also, FAT32 is a very inefficient format for large drives. A 300GB drive in FAT32 is actually rather nightmarishly inefficient.)

1. OS X will read NTFS.

2. OS X will read/ write to FAT32

3. Fat32 has a limitation of max file Size of 4Gb or so.

So what do you recommend I do? Buy a MacDrive and install it on Windows and then proceed? Or what?

EDIT: I can just buy a MacDrive, use it on a Mac and install MacDrive on Windows. Then on both systems, I can read and write. Correct?

Yeah. I know they will be a little bit more expensive.

For the moment, I ain't buying a Mac. So suggestions for external hard drives. Best one with power source and best one without.

Reliability is something everybody looks ahead, but i guess only lucky gets away most of the time. Speed is 7200 rpm quite regular unless SSD's? Looks? R u sure cause WD & Seagate or us are n't bother much by the looks

I guess he was not talking about getting a wife

Seagate is a better choice. I bought a wd 1 tb external and in less than a month the power adaptor conked off. Its a week, am still waiting for them to replace it. And try getting through their toll free number...just try. Not that seagate is any better in support. WD is onsite support..in case of seagate you ll have to go to them.

Only the last one on that list is without a power source right? I'm only talking of the 1TB ones or higher.

Also, hasn't the Seagate GoFlex already launched? Or has it not come to India?
