Hey everyone,

I have posted earlier once regarding this problem.. i have an Samsung 80gb hdd, model no. SP0802N in the 3.5" case...

http://www.techenclave.com/forums/external-hard-drive-problem-80194.html

As Eazy n the others suggested, i tried to format it... but the damn thing got stuck at 44%... then one of my friends tried 0 level formatting ( not really sure what it means ). It got stuck at 0% and stopped responding. We had to shut it down. Then I connected the hdd via the ide port. Now the problem is that it is showing that it is working properly in the device manager tab but is not visible in the my computer folder. I'm totally exhausted...:@ :@ :( :(

PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!!!!

bad sectorS?? bah if its under warranty then get your drive replaced!! ( i have had the exact same problem as you though, and got my samsung replaceD)

It will not show up in my computer folder untill you parttition and format the HDD - do this from XP's Disk Management.

Guys, i tried the disk management but can't figure it out. Here's a screenshot:

hddax1.jpg

The funny thing is that it is only showing 31.4 gb out of the 80 gb. :S
Secondly, i don't get a option to partition it..

What to do now??

The Initalise option MUST have shown up when you started disk management and you must have stopped it from running... is this correct ? That is why the HDD shows "not intialised" .....

now right click mouse in the space which shows "31.49GB - Unallocated" and see if a option to intialise the HDD shows up .... intialise it and DO NOT make it a DYNAMIC drive. After intialisation then right click on same area and make your partitions first (make sure you select NTFS) and next right click again and format the partitions you have now made.

I think when you intialise the HDD the correct size should show up. If you do not see full HDD space then what I would do is look for a MBR wiping utility from the HDD maker (*) and wipe the HDD's MBR clean and then start all over again in Disk Management. If you are going to do this you will have to do it very carefully - DONT WIPE OUT THE WRONG DRIVE !! ... been there - done that :D

(*)I have also successfully removed all MBR entries using a freeware named Ranish Partition Manager. Take care with such programs - do not wipe clean the wrong HDD. :O

Eazy..Nooooo, he needs to right click in the area that says 31.49GB " Not initialized"

The right click menu there would show an initialize option after clicking on which he can format and create partitions

MY BAD .... THANKS for the correction :ashamed:

See... I have never missed this intialisation thingy so I did not know what is required to intialise as an after thought :D

hey guys thanx for the help...i am able to use the drive now but the problem is that out of the 80gB drive i am able to use only 31.49 gB .... rest seems to have dissapeared somewhere

please help me out on retrieving the lost space....

thanx

problem with your drive is - your drive isn`t partitioned properly, as your drive wasn`t partitioned @ 44% only. However, at the time of initialization it got initialized only the amount of size it was partitioned.

To rectify it off... open computer management > Disk management > right click the drive 1 (according to the screenshot attached) > Delete partition > Format partition > select the size if you want to do more than 1 partition > Initialize the 1st partition as primary partition > Mark partition as active > do more partitions if you like.

phew.... done

However, i would recommend to get the drive replaced first as not entering into 0 level formatting is something alarming !!!

Eazy, U THE MAN!!!

Now, i AM getting 80 gb... going to try to format it now.. will post again.

Thanks!:hap2:

Siddharth, want to guess the total amt of storage space he has? ;)

I surely do want to guess Superczar but can't muster up the courage....

Hey Eazy, can i borrow some ? Really need it... Downloaded lots of.. ahem...stuff from the net....:D

On a more serious note, i am thinking of getting the HDD replaced.. it's still in the warranty period. :ohyeah: What say?

Dont listen to superczar ... he is pulling your leg about my HDDs .... after all I am a poor retired old man. :)

I would suggest that you run a thorough error scan of your current HDD with the freewares HD Tune and Diskcheckup and if there are no errors then dont get the HDD replaced - you never know what you will get as a replacement HDD. Knowing my bad luck I would live with a known working drive rather than take a chance with a new drive. I have on 2 occassions had HDDs replaced and both the replacements died very soon :(

EDIT: How is the 80GB HDD working ? You partitioned and formatted the HDD ?

I'm being able to upload and download data to the drive. I'll download these softwares and run these tests you mentioned.

Thanks!

in my experience ... Dynamic disk is one pain in the butt...
In a scenerio my OS got damaged...i had accidently deleted the Acronis image...& my 300GB HDD was fully packed...i had to put it into my friends place...who had 80 gb free & ~10 DVDs' i had got used up & i still lost the remaining data cause i HAD to format c:\.....

IMHO...unless u really need it..dont convert the drives to dynamic..
