I dont know whether this is an os problem, mobo problem, front usb port problem, or external hdd problem.
Os - windows 8 x64.
mobo - asus p5ld2vm-se (lga 775 mobo)
ports - 2x front usb & 1 back usb 2.0 ports.
cabinet - lancool k65 something.
external hdd - verbatim usb 3.0.

problem started after my os had to be reinstalled. the front usb ports before os reinstallation used to give full speed and never disconnected the external drive while copying files off it. I usually got speeds of 29-30MBps while copying. After os reinstallation, only the back port gives this speed. The front ports have gone crazy. I can copy the first file at around 30Mbps. Then when copying second file it disconnects the next moment. It then reconnects on its own. Then the same thing happens if i try to copy any file from external hdd to my comp.

subsequent reconnects to the front ports does not help and no matter which file i try to copy the drive disconnects. i tried changing power settings to high performance and disabled usb suspend etc but nothing works. this has started happening everyday now after reinstalling the os. never happened on windows 7 with the same external hdd.

This problem does not come on the only free remaining back usb port. i checked device manager, and all ports are at full speed. even the front port connected to external hdd shows full speed and shows power as 500mA. what is wrong in my system? do i need to reinstall the os again?

Check the front USB2 header. Reconnect it at the motherboard.
IF the problem continues, then check the header at the chassis.
If the problem continues after that, then it's the problem with chassis USB header. Time to replace it or the whole chassis - depending on the chassis & structure.

I too had the same problem, after cleaning up my internals in the Cabinet and installed W8 on it. It took some time to understand the problem. As suggested above, ensure that there are bends(creating tension) on the cable which is connecting the Mobo and the USB front ports. Try reconnecting those cables once again or try connecting to alternate USB headers and see.

i tried different headers. front ports were numbered ports 7-8 first, now they are on 5-6. still the hdd disconnects and i get low speeds. The cable was routed without any bends to it.
Since it didnt make a difference, has the controlling chipset on mobo has become faulty?
i dont think i can find only front panel pcb for lancool k62 here easily. The pcb has 2 front usb ports plus audio/mic & on off and reset mini buttons on it.

Did you check the headers at the chassis side?
From the description it sounds like a problem with USB header at the chassis (side).
In that case, you need to replace it.
Or, buy a 3.5'' front panel USB port set along with internal card reader. That will cost you 200/-[DOUBLEPOST=1364467065][/DOUBLEPOST]
no I didn't clean them. will clean them properly and will get back with the results. :)

Cleaning won't do any good unless there is huge amount of dust. But it can do the opposite.

The front panel header has the wires attached to it permanently to the pcb. The only connectors are for power, led, usb and hd audio coming out from it.
What i cant understand is, it was working properly hours earlier before the install. Can an os installation damage hardware to such an extent to make it unusable?

Update: I cleaned the front usb ports. 1st one disconnects the hdd as soon as it connects to the pc & again reconnects the hdd. It disconnects as soon as you try to do anything. The second usb port also disconnects but not much. After the first disconnect, it hasn't disconnected even after copying 1+ Gb of data off the drive. Probably one port has become loose and gone bad.[DOUBLEPOST=1364548668][/DOUBLEPOST]wonder who sells spare parts for lancool cabinets here in india. i think i found the front usb kit but cant find it on sale here.

I used to get this issue after sometime with my zebronics cabby. Its not after re-installation or hardware changes. i thought that the USB cable has gone kaput. But that was not the case. I even replaced the USB cable with a better one. But after sometime the issue started. But this never happened with my old Mercury cabinet. So realised that the front panel ports PCB must have gone bad. But still 2gb/4gb/8gb flash drives worked perfectly. I wonder how branded cabbies like the lancool gives the same type of issue. Till now i felt that el cheapo cabbies like the mercury, zebronics will start giving issues after sometime. But isnt lancool a reputed brand ?. Ok for this issue there is no other way except to go for a front panel bracket..

get like the one like in the 1st link . The above link contains a USB 3.0 front panel bracket. What you can do is, get a USB 3.0 to 2.0 converter (2nd link)

As of now use the converter for USB 2.0. When you get a motherboard with USB 3.0 header, use it directly.. But it may cost you at the same time very useful...
