And to add onto those warnings, you normally can't access SMART data unless the USB adapter also supports UASP protocol.
And SMART data is crucial for most NAS solutions since they depend on it for pre-warning mail or pre-parity checks etc

Not to mention there's the risk that the parity might not be up-to date if the USB cable gets loose resulting in the drive disconnecting randomly at times.
