Hey Guys,

I will be booking my wife and 2 months daughter airlines tickets for Mumbai to JFK. Two things I need urgent info.

1. I need bassinet for my infant. So how to book that. Makemytrip has no option while booking it and their support says that depends upon Airlines. I want the bassinet confirmed coz its going to be a 19 hour journey.

2. I will require escort facility at Mumbai Airport and JFK Airport, who will be carrying the luggage. So how to book that. Should I contact Airlines or Airport authority for this.

I hope there must be people having knowledge about this. Please share your inputs.

Better call the airlines and ask them.

Your airline would be able to arrange this as a courtesy service. They do that for the handicapped and the elderly but I don't know how forthcoming they would be in your case. Why don't you carry your own bassinet? Apart from the availability issue, hygiene should also be a consideration.

1 . Bassinet?? Why are you taking one? I was under the assumption that all airlines give them to you.

Mind you I don't have a family of my own or anything. But i always see the airline hostess or steward bringing it to the families after take off and then taking it before landing.
The trollies, they take it or give it right before entering or leaving the plane.

2. For old, handicapped people there is this. Not for people with babies.

Booked tickets with AirIndia and I confirmed with them. Bassinet will be provided but no escort facility. They give escort facility only for senior citizens or kids travelling alone. Don't understand this logic if a women is travelling with an infant how she can carry the luggage and stroller with her.

Check the Mumbai airport site and they provide this facility. So have requested them via mail. Hoping to get a reply.

I understand that its your wife hence the sentiment.

But i constantly see women of many nationalities with a child or 2 juggling multiple luggage in airport. I for one personally know someone who came to miami with 2 twin girls. around 1 year old both. alone. husband was working with me. First time to US also.

Bassinet: Even if the airline confirms on the phone that your bassinet request is confirmed, please don't consider it confirmed until a cabin crew member confirms it to you ONBOARD. Bassinets are limited and are usually given out to passengers sitting on the bulkhead seats (where bassinets are fixed) so make sure you get those seats as well during check-in.

Escort/Assistance: Even though this service has been stopped by most airlines in the world, Air India still provides them on a case to case basis but there's no way to get this confirmed. My suggestion: In Mumbai, during check-in request the check-in staff for assistance, he/she may be able to provide you one. For JFK, request the cabin crew for the same and they MAY be able to provide this for you. (Don't forget to be nice to them, they will be going out of their way to get you this service in JFK)

More suggestions:
  • Check-in as much of your baggage as possible and travel with only one handbag per person (apart from baby's bag)
  • Read online about flying with infants, precautions and stuff.
  • Carry enough of baby food.
  • Carry blanket for the baby, the ones available onboard are not clean enough for infants.
  • Feed the baby during descent/landing as due to air pressure, the ears start to get blocked and feeding eases the pressure on the baby's eustachian tube.
Lemme know in case you need more help.
